Probably the best way to explain homosexuality to kids

There's probably many different ways how kids are tought about homosexuality in schools depending on where you live in the world. I guess I'm lucky that I live in a liberal country where, if I would have children, they could learn from the school system, society and their parents of course that there's nothing wrong with being gay. Even the longest running children's TV program here recently had a special message from our biggest local pop star, Paul Oscar (who happens to be gay) about this matter.

The clip is subtitled in English and in the scene Paul Oscar is returning to his backstage room greeted by his makeup lady, who happens to have a crush on him:

My four year old nephew asked me a few months back why I am not married. I told him that I'm so ugly that nobody wants to marry me. He then asked me if I hadn't found any girls who liked me, and I said no. So he asked 'And what about boys? Haven't you found any boys who like you either?'
There's no need to explain homosexuality to kids: they get it.

My daughter is nearly 3 and she doesn't think it strange that I have an ex boyfriend but am currently in a relationship with a girl. I think kids these days know more about the world than we did when we were younger.

By the way, I fully realise the above statement makes me sound old. I'm not. I'm only 25. smile

Childrend don't need an explanation if adults would not act weird about same sex relationships.

The son of my neighbour was my best friend since his birth. Unfortunately the family moved back to England. He was very worried about leaving me alone in Amsterdam, so he figured I should get married.

This was a few years ago, he was 7:

* Is there a man you really like and would want to marry with?

- Well, I like Londonboy and I like Prince.

*Prince? The son of the queen?

-No, Prince is a musician, he is great.

*Where does he live?

-USA.

**Thinking pause**

* One lives in London and the other one lives in the USA. So, isn't there any man over here in Amsterdam who you love? That would be more practical.

- Yes, that indeed would be very practical, but unfortunately not.

**Thinking pause**

*Are you lesbi?

-Not really, I think I'm bisexual, but do favor men a bit more than women. I think.

**Thinking pause**

-Why do you ask me, do you have somebody in mind for me?
*Well, I watched a Mr. Bean movie and there was this blond lady with big boobies and maybe you could marry her!

**Inside myself I'm cracking up, you should have seen the extreme enthousiastic look on his face when he said she had big boobies smile **

*Yes, but if she is in a Mr. Bean movie, she probably does not live in Amsterdam, either, now does she?

-You are right. That is not practical.

When I think about this conversation, I still crack up inside. And what I thought was so wonderful about it, is that he doesn't know any better than that I could marry a man or a woman. It's of no difference to him.

He was just very happy that I did not have to narrow my marriage opportunities to a man. He actually would have loved it, if I would marry a woman with big boobies.

So, when socoiety considers a gay relationship the same as being in a heterosexual relationship, you don't have to explain anything to a child. That is also why gay marriage is important, for children in Holland it is normal that gay people get married. It's just as normal as a heterosexual couple getting married.

They will know some kid from school who has two dads or two moms and that is just as normal as there are kids who have divorced parents.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Exactly.

It's not the kids who are weird about it.

good... i am thinking many kids can get it on their own. I think they are taught that is it odd.

Some families like keep secrets. So what if Uncle Eddie is gay... or Aunt Lisa likes girls and guys. The kids if left alone and as long as there is no one teaching them slurs or to judge them personally I do not see why some families hide it.

One thing I hear kids use a lot is "that is gay" to mean bad or even used towards someone they think or may know is gay. I always try to say something. I have had parents (some I know some random) get annoyed.

One person I know pretty well said something about their belifes... i said "what about Judge not lest ye be Judged?"

"well I'm not gay"

"but do you follow ALL the bible? Have you not sinned and fallen short and ONLY by the blood are you saved?"

that worked...

Well...they kind of know what they given. And if they're not given false or incomplete info...or aren't unreasonably sheltered, they understand. When ure only allowed a partial picture is when they get confused.
