‘Roots’ A+E Mini Sets Cast: Anna Paquin, Forest Whitaker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Derek Luke, Others Take On Iconic Roles

(I guess I'll move this out of a thread and give it its own)
A+E Networks has lined up a roster of established actors and newcomers for its eight-hour event miniseries Roots, a remake of the iconic 1977 ABC mini, which drew critical praise and blockbuster viewership. Cast in the reboot, from A+E Studios, are Oscar winners Forest Whitaker and Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Derek Luke, Chad L. Coleman and Erica Tazel.

Really?

I'm glad my job isn't predicting these things, I'd fail miserably.

I'm kind of curious.

I gagged when I heard about the remake a while back...I double-GAGGED when I read that LaVar Burton is an executive Producer....They did not even come close to casting the ICONS that were cast in the original mini-series...A&E/Lifetime network did not have the GUTS to cast Regina King, Alfre Woodard, Idris Elba, David Oyelowo, Jeffrey Wright and the list goes on...There are Powerhouse Actors out there but A&E did not know what they were thinking when they chose to produce the project...

Urgh!!!! What is the problem in Hollywood? Have they ceased hiring quality writers anymore or are there no more left with originality? Why is it that they have to keep REMAKING every successful project, whether from TV or film, from the past???? STOP IT!!!!!! hammer

As good as the original "Roots" is, it's still hard to watch. Whose idea was it to think it would be great to remake this? I'm not tuning in. Nope, not doing it. disbelief

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I wish they would stop already. It's just like music, tv, etc. Assembly line style content because all they want to do is replicate a known successful formula. I think it's mainly a few independents taking chances on original ideas these days.

This project is ill conceived.

Anybody who saw the original could tell you this shouldn't be done.

The geniius of the original was not only the brilliance of the black actors in the cast who became household names, but the casting of the white characters. Sandy Duncan. Robert Reed. Chuck Connors. Carolyn Jones. Lorne Greene. Lloyd Bridges. These were All-American, Main Street celebrities who agreed to put their squeaky-clean images aside to portray villains in the story.

I was being a bit more fecetious than that, given at least one unflattering incident he found himself in at an airport a few years back.

In fairness to his acting chops, I've not seen much of his work. From all I hear, though, yeah -- he'd be as decent as anyone, I suppose.

You must tell me what he's done. I know he's supposed to have a substance abuse problem, but I need to know if he has people issues.
