I love how you say you don't like blood and gore - and people recommend a bunch of slasher movies. Some people just can't follow directions.
The Innocents (1961) - incredibly scary and creepy movie, with absolutely no gore whatsoever
And of course, you need a little Hitchcock in there. Besides the usual Psycho and The Birds, these older films are great. Suspenseful, but definitely not in the horror genre.
Rebecca (1940) - Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, with Judith Anderson as the extremely creepy Mrs. Danvers

This film literally scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. One of the creepiest vampire films I've ever seen. I still can't watch the part when the kid hovering above, knocking at the window rises out of the casket. To this day, I always have to turn my head away or fast foward thru that part. Low-budget film but I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Just the building of the suspense was magnificent! Great flick! "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

As a hard-core horror junkie, I heartily agree with 95% of the recommendations on here. I personally love this film for Halloween night viewing:
- - - Not really "scary", per se, but it is loaded with wonderful imagery, great performances & fantastic stories. Only John Carpenter's original Halloween tops it for Halloween night viewing!

It should be a comedy, not a horror movie. Wolfen was a much better horror movie from the same time period.

what????????? I think Wolfen is horrible! The Howling and American Werewolf in London were and probably are the only two good werewolf movies every made in my opinion. They both have comedy elements as well as groundbreaking effects and horrific moments too. Have you seen all these recently or are you going off of memory? I'm watching the Howling now. It is funny--I'll say that for it. American Werewolf in London is a classic. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

'The Conjuring' scared the hell out of me I usually don't like modern-day scary movies (I prefer the old classics),but this one is great!

I agree. The Conjuring is the best scary movie of the 2000's

. yep. imo, what makes it even more intriguing is the fact that although it looks like a classic 80s b-horror genre, in fact it was filmed in 2009

. . . silver bullet is great! i've been conducting a king marathon on the edges here and revisiting some of my favorite king movies, like Creepshow and Cat's Eye. i'm partial to his 80s movies, but his recent work is equally fun and rather perfect for hallowe'en. ..
