20 shootings across Chicago on Sunday

What is happening in Chicago?
Is this a regular Sunday in the summer?
This almost read like an episode of 24

Police officers investigate the scene of the shooting in the 5200 block of South Justine Street where four people were wounded late Sunday evening on Sept. 27, 2015 in Chicago.© Alexandra Chachkevitch/Chicago Tribune/TNS Police officers investigate the scene of the shooting in the 5200 block of South Justine Street where four people were wounded late Sunday evening on Sept. 27, 2015 in Chicago.

A man was killed and at least 19 other people, including a 10-year-old girl, have been wounded since Sunday afternoon in Chicago shootings, police said.

A 24-year-old man died after being shot at 2:02 p.m. on the 3900 block of Roosevelt Road in the Lawndale neighborhood, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was shot in the back and shoulder and was later pronounced dead, police said.

Most recently, a 35-year-old man and a 34-year-old man were wounded in a shooting around 2:49 a.m. Monday in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the Northwest Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Ron Gaines.

The two men were near the intersection of Grand and Mango avenues when they were shot. The 35-year-old was shot twice in the back and was listed in serious condition, Gaines said. The 34-year-old was shot in the stomach, and his exact condition was immediately unknown, Gaines said.

Police officers responding to a call of people shot in the area saw an attacker and started running after him in the 2200 block of North Major Avenue, Gaines said. During the foot chase, police fired shots, but no one was wounded, Gaines said.

Police took a male into custody.

Early Monday morning, police officers blocked off the entrance and the sidewalk in front of Jerez Sports Bar & Grill with yellow crime tape. Officers went in and out of the bar as they investigated the crime scene.

Around midnight, a 23-year-old man walked into Rush University Medical Center after getting shot in the leg in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Gaines said.

The man was in the 4000 block of West 55th Street when he was shot. He was transferred from Rush to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

About 11:20 p.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the North Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Janel Sedevic.

The man was standing on the corner in the 5000 block of West Division Street when someone fired shots at him from a passing vehicle, Sedevic said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Sedevic said.

About 10:20 p.m., a 50-year-old man was shot in the leg while trying to break a fight in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Gaines said.

The man was at Humboldt Park in the 1300 block of Luis Munoz Marin Drive when he attempted to break a fight between two people, Gaines said. One of the people then shot him in the leg.

The 50-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.

Police took a suspect into custody, but no official charges have been released as of early Monday morning.

Around 10:40 p.m., three men were seriously hurt and a woman was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer.

The four people were standing on a sidewalk in the 5200 block of South Justine Street when someone pulled up to them in a vehicle and fired shots, Greer said.

A 35-year-old man was hit in the leg and hip. A 33-year-old man was shot in the hip area, and a 30-year-old man was struck in the groin. All three men were listed in serious condition at Stroger Hospital, Greer said.

A 29-year-old woman was grazed in the shoulder and was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition, Greer said.

No one was in custody as a result of the shooting early Monday morning, police said.

About 9:40 p.m., two men were wounded in a shooting in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, Greer said.

A 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were standing outside in the 3000 block of West Lexington Street when a vehicle pulled up to them and one of the people inside it fired shots, Greer said.

The 18-year-old was shot in the chest and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The 23-year-old was grazed in the wrist, and he refused medical attention on the scene, Greer said.

Shortly after the shooting, police officers in the area saw a vehicle fleeing the scene of the shooting. The officers started chasing the vehicle, which crashed about a mile south in the 1400 block of South California Avenue, Greer said.

Three males were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, Greer said.

About 6:30 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot on the 11700 block of South Harvard Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood, said Officer Nicole Trainor.

The man, who police said was a gang member, was shot in the right leg and taken to Roseland Hospital in good condition. He was on the street when a black Nissan drove up and someone inside fired shots, striking the man, Trainor said.

At 5:48 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and grazed in the head, Trainor said. The shooting happened on the 6900 block of East End Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, Trainor said.

He managed to get himself to Jackson Park Hospital, where his condition was not immediately known.

At 2:30 p.m. a man was shot in the left hand on the 5200 block of South Lowe Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. The man refused medical attention, police said.

At 2:14 p.m. a 27-year-old man was shot on the 700 block of North Harding Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, Trainor said. The man was shot in the face, the upper right shoulder, the lower leg and the arm, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized, Trainor said.

Shortly before 2 p.m. a 22-year-old man was shot in the leg on the 3300 block of West 38th Place in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

Earlier, at 12:50 p.m. on the 1400 block of East 66th Place in the Woodlawn neighborhood, three people including the girl were wounded, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

A 10-year-old girl was grazed in the neck by gunfire and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was in good condition, Sedevic said.

In addition, a 19-year-old man was shot in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in critical condition, police said.

An 18-year-old woman was grazed on her calf by gunfire, and she was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where her condition stabilized, Sedevic said.

Bullshit. Don't resort to conspiracy crap when society is simply fucked up - and non-existing gun laws in the US don't help either.

Chicago has some of the most stringent anti-gun laws in the country. Which basically means that criminals (who don't respect laws of any kind) can get plenty of guns, but law-abiding people can't.

And that is exactly what people try to express whenever there is and shooting a people start calling for gun control. It makes no sense.

Crime statistics are listed for U.S. cities with a population of 250,000 or greater. Rates are based on cases per 100,000 people for all of calendar year 2012.

it's a proven fact that major unemployment raises crime stats. now this is a nationwide statistical graph chart. so why isn't the government funding these areas to create jobs to balance out the areas of major unemployment, and give grants to fund more police that come from these areas of high crime. i mean it would create jobs for both field officers, detectives and a office/record staff.

>

it would make sense for local government decision makers to create police/law enforcement jobs from within the local jurisdictions. why bring people into a community to police people when the people they police are stereo typed from the get go/start.

it's called "diversity." like psyches produce more positive and understandable communications in highly stressful situations.

.

joblessness is still alive and well in certain major cities across america. while crime goes up the psuedo concerned citizen(s) continue to fingerpoint and the (seem to) try to play the scapegoat game

rolleyes hmmm looks like chicago is on this chart.

it's not like anyone is in a race to be right. it's like previously stated " it's a proven fact that major unemployment raises crime stats."

no one in their right mind would try to justify the shootings. and no one in there right mind could deny the pavlovian effect going on, aka: conditioned reflex in facing no hopes for socail advancement through massive unemployment in the above cities - especially the urban areas.

Even thought poverty and crime have always been linked in human history, I don't know if this can be blamed on a lot of the sensless murders that have been taking place.
People are not stealing or killing for food or shelter. They are stealing shooting and killing for a lot of other reasons. And most of it is pure selfishness.

Why not? This generation of black, brown, and white amazes me thinking amnesia, silence, or speaking about anything isn't political. Because race was not the focus of the post. I'm not going to assume that all those people were of a particular race. I'm very comfortable with talking about racial issues and politics. That's is why I go to the P&R forum to do so.

  • Drugs / The People who take drugs.
  • Educational System
  • Joblessness / Under-emplyement
  • Criminal justice / juvenile system: "War On Drugs"

Spikes in shooting in Chicago usually occur onThursday's and Sunday's. I don't know why shootings spike on those days but there it is...

How many people on the org who remember the United States minus the drug culture? Drug selling and taking has corrupted our nation in ways I don't think most could fathom.. The killings and shootings in Chicago and other places are fueled by the drug culture, those who sale drugs and the customers who use. If these shootings appear "random" they aren't; these teenage boys / men aren't shooting and/or killing just to claim the park bench... its all about drugs and territory. The big differences the geography of were drugs are being sold and bought.

Before the house / real estate ponzi scheme crashed in 2007 / 2008, drug customers purchased their drugs in and around Chicago housing projects. The major housing projects, Robert Taylor Homes ( South Lake Shore Drive), Stateway Gardens, Ida B Homes ( 4 blocks away from South Lake Shore Drive, mile and half away from Mccormick Convention Center West), and Cabrini Green ( 4 Blocks from Michgan Ave. ) were on prime real estate and in central locations. If you lived in the burbs, you could swing by Cabrini Green and get your drugs before you went home. If you lived in the south / southwest burbs you could get off the drive and swing by Robert Taylor Homes and continue home. When those housing projects were torn down, gangs and their customers were scatterd through out Chicago. In many instances, gangs moved into primarily poor/working poor/working class neighborhoods. Gangs have also moved into Chicago parks to sale drugs.

An unintended consequences of tearing down Chicago housing projects... street gang hierarchy was destroyed. Gangs who use to shot and ( along with innocent) kill each other, did so in and around the projects. When those gangs were scattered across the city, the structure of the gangs broke down, every gang member wanted to be" the leader." There are over a hundered different gangs in Chicago, gang members out number the police force. The size of gangs can range from 8 to about 100 members. The days of Black Stone Rangers , Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings, Latin Mafia or ( large and centralized) gangs on the street are long gone... most of these guys don't won't to take orders from anyone. Its not that the number of people being killed in Chicago yearly has changed all that much... it's the location, the area where people are being killed. When people were dying in housing projects, the line of thought was indifference.

Chicago Police department use to have a Gang taskforce. The gang taskforce had to be dissolved because they were also a gang.... they stole , sold drugs, and drug money from gang bangers. You can check CBS 60 mintues website and see the report they did on Chicao Police Gang Taskforce. Former Chicago mayor, Dick M. Daley selected FBI agent Jody Weis (as Superintendent of Police) as compromise to kept United States Department of Justice from ceasing control of CPD.

Lets speak about the people who take drugs in the good ol' USA. The majority of people who fuel the drug sales and profits in the US are white people, yet black and brown people get the jail time. That's a fact.

I could not view the first link(at work)

the 2nd one said this: The report says that in 2014 the U.S. recorded the fewest murders since 2009. Most other violent crimes, such as robbery, burglary, theft and arson have declined, while aggravated assaults and rapes, which now includes a broader definition, were on the rise in 2014.

disbelief

Gun laws don't affect crimes such as these. Honestly, how many of the guns used in those crimes were registered to the people shooting them you think?

I'd be interested in finding out whether or not the Police Dept scaled back their enforcement just before this "wave" of shootings???

Thanks for providing insight, context and depth with your input. It's extremely important to have more than a superficial understanding of the matters being discussed.

I always remind people that not much goes on uptown that they don't know about downtown. In many cases TPTB get theirs off the top, then look the other way.

In my case it was retired LE officers that put me up on game.

My understanding is that the gun laws in Chicago don't mean diddly-squat when right across the border in Gary, Indiana you will find some of the laxes gun laws in the country.

So to say "Chicago has strict gun laws but lots of gun murders, so gun laws don't work!" is simplistic at best.

http://www.wbez.org/serie...ter-106538

Gary officials had asked for tougher gun restrictions within city limits. But the state of Indiana, which is run by NRA-supported Republican lawmakers had refused to enforce those laws. They even passed a state law overriding any local gun bans.

In Indiana, it’s illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a gun. It’s also against the law to carry one in public without a state license. Still, Indiana has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation.

In 2010, Indiana lawmakers passed a law rendering useless any local government firearms restriction bans, such as Gary’s own ban on semiautomatic weapons.

Dr. Vernon Smith has represented Gary in the Indiana House for the last 23 years.
He has a hypothesis on why Indiana’s gun laws are the way they are.

“If there was ever a state that was owned totally by the NRA, Indiana is one,” Smith said. “Indiana has constantly protected the NRA and carried out the NRA’s agenda.”

In the past, Smith introduced bills requiring background checks at gun shows or training for gun owners, all of which never got a hearing.

And to further educate you:

http://wgntv.com/2014/09/...ngbangers/

In six years, 3,824 guns taken off Chicago gang bangers that were used in crimes came from our next door neighbor: Indiana. It’s why WGN Investigates took undercover cameras over the border to see why.

It’s so easy here, the (gun) dealers joked with our producer and photographer about it. One bragging, “We deal with Illinois residents all the time and we invite them to come to Indiana.”

Another dealer said, “As long as you’re an Indiana resident and you don’t have any trouble, I just write down your name and address so if they come knocking on my door, and say this gun was used in a robbery, well this is who I sold it to and then you got to explain what you did.”

But it’s easy to scam. Like one now infamous guy who simply used a fake Indiana drivers license. David “Big Man” Lewisbey filled a duffle bag with 9 millimeter and 40-caliber handguns. He bought them at various gun shows then sold them to gang bangers in Chicago for big bucks.

Tom Ahern, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says, not only it is easier to buy in Indiana than Illinois, it’s cheaper too. He says the combination has meant a steady flow of guns to Chicago that are involved in crime.
