Help: I just started playing on this NFL Draftkings Fantasy site

Can anyone offer any insight on an effective way 2 draft a team?

I have a few strategies but I'm a greenhorn on this fantasy football thing.

I need 2 WIN!

According to what I've read, you need a lot of money, computing power and some powerful algorithms to win. These weekly fantasy leagues have been taken over by the same technology that's used on Wall Street to trade millions each day, working on small inefiiciencies in the market.

For fantasy football, these guys are calculating every conceivable winning team combination and playing them all. If they win one, it pays for all the losers plus a little bit of profit. They aren't out to make $1,000,000 by waging $100. They're wagering $500,000 - $750,000 and trying to return $1,000,000.

There are plenty of articles on Deadspin, etc. that lay out how the small guy has little to no chance of ever winning Draft Kings.

On another note - have you ever played fantasy football before? I never have, because it seems to me that when you do, you no longer watch a game to see who wins. You only watch it to see if your player performs well. That seems to take the fun out it, IMO.

Anyway, good luck if you play.

Check it out. This article is from Bloomberg and is titled "You Aren't Good Enough To Win Money Playing Fantasy Football":

Analysis from Rotogrinders conducted for Bloomberg shows that the top 100 ranked players enter 330 winning lineups per day, and the top 10 players combine to win an average of 873 times daily. The remaining field of approximately 20,000 players tracked by Rotogrinders wins just 13 times per day, on average.

<snip>

Only the top 1.3 percent of players finished in the green during the three months measured by the Sport Business Journal. (NOTE: Those were baseball leagues, not football.) An unrelated survey of more than 1,400 fantasy sports players conducted by Krejcik of Eilers Research this summer found that 70 percent of participants have lost money.

<snip>

Justin van Zuiden, a 31-year-old who lives in Sterling, Ill., and goes by the online handle “STLCardinals84,” invests about $5,000 in entry fees for about 50 rosters on an average night during the baseball and basketball seasons. When football season starts, he raises his Sunday spend as high as $8,000. He claims to have made “high five figures, low six figures” over each of the past three years, which is more than he earns from his day job working as a certified public accountant.

“Be careful with your dollars and start small,” van Zuiden wants to tell novices. “No matter how much somebody knows about sports, if you put an established player up against a new player, that established player's probably going to have a 75 percent chance of winning—at least.”

It's a long article and very informative. But to me, it seems like these fantasy football leagues are about as profitable to the player as, say, slot machines.

My advice would be to leave that shit to the big boys since you are

new at it and join a league with friends who may have a 10 or 12

team league set up and everyone puts 20 or 25 dollars in the pot

and the winner will have a nice little purse. My league has 12

in it we are playing 5 dollars each. I know one of my friends has a

league where they play 50 dollars a pop and they even have and the

winner gets the money and a championship trophy. They have been doing

it for 10 seasons.
