Both. Though she ever actually threw anything, my mom was definitely not above giving a kid one upside the head. (And before anyone jumps on that, it was just a "knock it off" tap - not a slap or slug.)

My dad was a spanker (because his dad was) until my mom convinced him it was wrong...so my older brother and I got a couple of spankings as little kids but my younger brothers never, ever were spanked.

We were taught that no one has the right to lay a hand on anyone and my dad realized that this meant him as well.

I actually can't remember any physical confrontations between siblings growing up. It just never happened. That's not to say that we always got along...there were fights but it only ever escalated to yelling at each other, never hitting.

We'd usually get "The Stare" first...if we kept cutting up, then we'd get one upside the head, or the belt (depending on the infraction).

Had to be something BAD to bring the chancla out.

Otherwise a stern look and some tongue-lashing went a long way.

Usually THE LOOK was enough, failing that it was licks (arms/legs, never the head)
After that came the psychology...and She was damn right.

LOL @ The shoe, my mother would go to pull hers off and me and my sister would take off running. She had a good arm so no matter the distance one of us would still get hit, good times biggrin

Yep, we'd get the stare first...

My mother didn't believe in slapping or throwing things at kids, but she was a swatter, touch those toes. lol Mom had a list of things that were automatic... paddle meets ass. Grounding and taking your shit and/or selling it ( she would remind you... she bought ) were her favorite forms of punishment.

My mom would never ground a child because (she said) it was more of a punishment for her. lol

That was reserved for acting out in public. My aunt would patiently take us back to the car(or nearest restroom), slip off that slipper and wear our little legs out, then after the sniffles were done, an explanation was given, and then we would proceed with our day.

I was Born and raised in The South..Nothing was thrown, that must be a Northern thing....The average Southern Parent believed in Switches & Belts...Several times I had to go outside and pick the Switch that I was gonna get whipped with...Southern Parents gave you "the talk" while they whipped you with the Switches...
