Stephen Colbert debuts his version of "The Late Show"

Did you watch it? I watched it through the Jeb! Bush interview.

I thought it was rough. Colbert looked really, really nervous. His stand-up routine was just OK. He has no sidekick. I've never heard of his band leader, or his band. There were no features or set bits like a Top Ten (Letterman), or Headlines (Leno), or Letters (Fallon). I;m sure there will be some, though.

The Sabra Hummus/possessed amulet bit was pretty lame. So was the Trump/Oreo cookies bit. That one seemed like Colbert wanted to do his "Colbert Report" character but just couldn't quite make himself do it. It's going to be hard to see Stephen Colbert do any political jokes and not think of the "Colbert Report" character.

I sure wish he'd booked Prince. It would have been PERFECT. Prince releasing an album on the day Colbert's show debuts? Couldn't have got any better than that. I have to say, in the nine years of the "Colbert Report", I don't think he booked three acts that I cared for. He almost always booked lame hipster acts like The Decemberists or Bon Iver. I hope he goes in for better acts on "The Late Show".

The lighting needs a LOT of work. They made George Clooney look like a 50-year-old Indian.

But Colbert is a great comedian. I'm sure he'll hit his stride sooner or later.

I'll say this..The entire Late Night Landscape is brand new..All of the Old-heads are retired so we got what we got...I'm a Politics Junkie so I've always liked Stephen's spoof on Washington but I didnt watch his show all the time. When I watched his Comedy Central show I did Laugh and that is the sign of a talented Comedian...I Loved Jay Leno but I didnt do a whole lot of laughing when I watched his reign. I DVR'd Stephen's Late Night Debut and I give it an A-...Once again he made me laugh @ different times and I wasnt just staring at the TV...His Guests were flops..I know the ladies Love themselves some Pretty-boy George Clooney but he ain't one of my favorite actors whatsoever. I Checked Stephens guest-bookings for the next few days and they are all CRAP except Vice Prez. Biden....I like that he's sticking with the "White Host & Black-House Band Director/sidekick" format...Is that suppose to be Ed Sullivan's theater? If so, the set designers made that joint look extra small..Dave's old set was like a Concert Hall setting, I guess Stephen is going for an "intimate" setting..and yes I CRINGED when I saw all of the Red, White & Blue colors all over the set...He Loves the American-theme for some strange reason.....Bottom-line, I was worried that he would not be able to pull off being a REAL Host as himself and I'm no longer worried...He's silly and Funny everything else is secondary...

I must admit that when I first heard that Stephen Colbert was picked to take over The Late Show, I was totally against it because I didn't want to lose The Colbert Report but having watched two episodes now. I'm cool with it because it's really just a grander scaled version of TCR without Stephen having to pretend he's a Republican asshole. He'll be fine and I'm so happy that he's back on TV. I rather enjoyed the oreo bit because he was jabbing at Trump who decreed he wouldn't eat oreos anymore because they've moved the Chicago factory to Mexico. Donald Trump's signature shirt and ties at Macy's have been made in Mexico, so that was just another of many cases of him being a lying hypocrite. I thought the Jeb Bush interview was good, when he asked the question about GWB and Jeb froze and looked like a deer caught in headlights was just priceless. Episode two was better but of course with me, there's no doing wrong with having Kendrick Lemar on. headbang

I don't watch the other late shows unless I hear about a good clip that I watch online but I'll be making a point of watching this. cool

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Episode 2 was better but IMO Colbert has a long, long way to go with his interviewing skills. Or, maybe he's doing well but with the way they cut and paste his interviews, it isn't working.

I thought Scarlett Johanssen was a dud. I don't find her interesting.

I missed Elon Musk and Kendrick Lamar, but I wouldn't have watched Kendrick Lamar anyway. Not into his music. I assume the Elon Musk interview had to be pretty good, as he IS an interesting fellow. Did Colbert ask him about his divorce? Last year, Musk tried to claim he was broke and had no cash to pay his ex-wife. He claimed his entire net worth was in assets that he couldn't liquidate. I thought that was a really BS move, and it's something I'd like to see Musk explain.

Anyway, I switched over to "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies", which was exactly that - Abraham Lincoln lopping off the heads of zombies! I watched the first 30 minutes of it, and it was GREAT. I'll finish it in the next day or two and then write an awesome review of it!

I thought the first show knocked it out of the park but as the week has gone on I'm less impressed. Tonight's joke about Paul Simon being a Paul Simon Tribute Band was lame. And Colbert doing the whistling part in the song really didn't come off well. The interview with Amy Schumer was too short. He did give Jeb Bush enough rope to hang himself, which was nice to see. I'm sure as the show goes on it will get better and better as Stephen works out the kinks.

I thought yesterday's show was awesome. Stephen and Amy were fun but Stephen and Stephen were just too funny with that bit about the monster that sounded a lot like Donald Trump. Plus it was the first time Stephen has ever done a show on a Friday which made it all the more fun for me. cool

I haven't seen the show yet.
I found a new onion booty site that appears to be from Brazil and I've been kinda busy with that.
In a couple of weeks, when I've worn myself out a bit, I might go ahead and give the show a looksee.
Til then, I hope the show all the best.

Y'know what?
Why just stop at the show?
I hope all the best with all of y'all too.
You guys do a decent job of helping me to kill time during breaks from the internet porn.
Y'know... with all your flat Earth theories, dating younger guys advice, prayer send-outs, Funkpill jokes, NSFW shit, deleted threads and whatnot.........

Agreed!

I liked last night's show too! I was laughing a lot! He has said himself he is more of a sketch comedian/actor and has never been a stand up. I actually am enjoying seeing his show delvelop and I am looking forward to seeing him hone all his skills in this talk show genre.

I have liked every show so far. The only thing I could have done without is some of his musical guests.

Yep, they have been pals for years. I remember during the past election cycle when they had their rally for sanity in DC.

Two brilliant guys.

Yeah - I noticed that too. Nice that he won't always just have the celebrity on that needs to plug something.

I didnt know Jon also produced the Colbert show...An Article I read last week said that people might be surprised when they see Jon's name AGAIN in the Late Show's closing credits as one of The Producers....So they're still together bizness-wise...

CynicKill

What made David special to me was that his persona was that of someone "above" it all.

He was cranky, disinterested and unbothered by the general hucksterism of the proceedings.

It was as anti-corporate as a late night talk show on a major network watched by millions could be.

I don't know if his audience caught that but it was definitely there.

Who would've been a good replacement for Letterman? Louis CK?

The Head Honcho @ CBS said David would NEVER fire his staff...He said David was Loyal to a'fault because a lot of people that worked on the Late Show did "nothing" and they needed to be taken off Salary...He said David's Late show was expensive and Colbert's show will be the opposite...

I don't believe it. It was just CBS being corporate and cheap. Just look at how many people it takes to put on the half hour "Daily Show"!
