Psittacoidea Best birds ever
The true parrots are about 350 species of colorful flighted (with a few notable exceptions[Notes 1]) hookbilled, mostly herbivorous birdsforming the superfamily Psittacoidea, one of the three superfamilies in the biological order Psittaciformes (parrots). [Notes 2] True parrots are widespread, with species in Mexico, Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Australia and eastwards across the Pacific Ocean as far as Polynesia. The true parrots include many of the familiar parrots including macaws, conures, lorikeets, eclectus, African gray parrot. The parrot family Psittacidae (along with family Cacatuidae) comprising order Psittaformes was traditionally considered to contain two subfamilies, the Psittacinae (typical parrots and allies) and the Loriinae (lories and lorikeets).[4] However, today the tree of the parrot family has been reorganized under the superfamily Psittacoidea: family Psittacidae has been split into three families, tribes Stringopini and Nestorini split out and placed under superfamily Stringopoidea and a new monotypic superfamily Cacatuoidea created containing family Cacatuidae.[5] TAXONOMY
Family Psittrichasiidae, Indian Ocean island parrots
Family Psittaculidae, Southeast Asian and Indian parrots

. last year when they remodeled part of the condo association lot where i live, the construction crews took out a tree in which there was a nest containing four baby blue jays. when i found the babies on the ground in the morning, i took them inside, warmed them up in tupperware on a heating pad. fed them a kind of warm infant bird formula with a spoon (hydration) and called the MN wildlife rehabilitation center. . the people at the center advised returning the birds to their nest (impossible) so the neighbors and i made a fake nest from a wire plant hanger and straw hat and soft cloth. we wedged the 'nest' into the crook of a tree near the old nest location with the babies inside. when the nest was in place, the parents returned almost immediately, (they had never left the site of the disaster) and began feeding the baby birds. . one baby disappeared overnight and was missng the next morning (it had been unconscious when i found it) i presume it died overnight. the other three babies actually lived and over the next ten days fledged out into their tufty little blue jay suits. the parents were devoted to them throughout. it was cool and sad the day they started leaving the nest. one bird fell in the course of learning to fly and broke something inside. i took it to the wildlife rehab center but it did not survive, they euthanized it. poor dear. the other two baby jays flew off with their parents once they were able. . i never knew how the story ended? hopefully the two babies made it. i saw a family of jays here last spring, wonder if it's the same family? . long-winded story longer, what really impressed me about the encounter was how the parents were willing to work with us. they followed me home when i took their babies inside to warm them up. waited for me outside and followed me back when i took the new nest over to where the old nest had been. they were cussing me out the whole way, and when i went up the ladder to wedge the new nest in, they dive bombed me, bouncing off the back of my head (i was wearing safety glasses, gloves and hoodie/hat). fierce!!!!!! . the parent blue jays were not only intelligent to understand what was being done, they cooperated the moment they could and then even though things were really weird for them, still raised their chicks. super smart. blue jays have a really bad and unfounded erputation for eating other birds' chicks. studies have shown they do this only in rare cases. overall, they're gorgeous, playful and very very cool birds imo. . i'd love to have a pet blue jay/small pet crow. one of the neighbors told me i should adopt and raise the babies; it would have been a violation of MN's laws to do so, and not in their best interests. but i hope they come visit me from time to time. . it's the warmth of your skin that makes him let go, probably. although, whenever i go out of town for a few days, leaving him along without snacks, my bird gets mad at me. i come home and he'll sometimes fly over, land long enough to poop me, turn around, whip his tail in my face then stalk off. no kisses for you, human! | |
