Creative people of the Org... Are you where you want to be?

I've noticed the Org has a lot of people with creative aspirations- Writers, painters, filmmakers, musicians etc. and I myself do a few of these things as well (still want to maintain my anonymity so I won't say what I do) anwyay, creatively I'm very happy with what I've accomplished but professionally, it's very hard and I am not where I want to be and the money has not come in yet and I'm not sure if it ever will, so I was wondering how the other artists of the Org are doing? Are you happy with where you are? Ever thought of giving up and doing something else?

Far, far from it.

I´ve basically given up on all my artistic or creative ambitions.

These days, I´m busy chewing, digesting and rechewing other folks´ creative output. confused

Nope.

I am definitely NOT using my creativity to earn a living.

My youngest is 5 years from graduating High School...I'd like to dream that THEN I may be able to get "serious" about Photography.

No. But then again I never had any expecations as to where I wanna be. Would be nice if I could actively develop my photography but alas, so many distractions.

That's sad. I was in a position like that for years. But I'm doing a course in painting now and getting back on track. Getting feedback from other creative people helps! Like Superfan (and Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel) said, don't give up!

A sure fire way of extinguishing the creative flame is get yourself a 3 year old toddler and a 2 month old baby! I can come up with creative ways of holding the baby in order to get that trapped wind out without getting covered in vomit. And I come up with creative ways of preventing a toddler tantrum with bribery and creative ways of changing the subject when she raises her need for ice cream. But creating art? No chance. IF I found any time to do such things, I would rather use it to get some sleep. Still, I wouldnt change it for the world. One day, in the far distant future, and the kids have flown the nest, I dream of my own little music studio and a bad ass, top of the range camera. But lets see how much is left in the bank account once the kids have left first. smile

That's the reason Kate Bush took 12 years to record Aerial. And she had only one child and a home studio!

People always tell me I've achieved a hell of a lot for someone my age but that doesn't mean I'm satisifed. I've come to realize that "where I want to be" is a constantly moving target.

Is anyone ever where they want to be?

I try and be quite zen about it, so that i'm at peace with where I am but still aware there's a hell of a lot more than I want to do, and rather than focusing on what I haven't done yet, I focus on what I have done recently and find some contentment with that as I continue to move forward.

For example, three months ago I headlined a festival to 12,000 people. And we have a new album finished and ready to come out. So looking at those couple of things, the fact that I'm happy in my personal life, and that I'm on track to hit my New Year's Resolution of reading 52 books this year (currently at 47 with 2.5 months left to go), I'm pretty content with 2015.

Not yet but hopefully within a year or two I will be. As things stand I am signed to a two album deal with a minor label based in England but come January, I will have been with them for 4 years. In that time I've recorded 4 songs, and they're not really any good. I had to take a lot of time off due to family stuff I won't get into here, and I had my lovely daughter (yip yip!) but things are moving again so fingers crossed...

Wow- Some great insight - thanks for sharing! Militant, 12,000 people? Very impressive!!! I think if I were where you are I could say that I feel very accomplished. What I do I enjoy and I do do it for me, "for my soul" as my boyfriend tells me, but I WOULD like for SOMETHING to eventually pay off financially or to get some sort of recognition. I suppose it is the ego inside me that wants that but I have had artistic aspirations and have been working at it for over half my life so it would be nice if, at some point, something would pay off. But I wouldn't quit because that would be a bit of a death, not having that outlet. Anyway, I was just wondering who on the Org had found success, who was okay with not yet having found success and I appreciate the feedback. smile

I want to take it higher. But I'm happy making a living doing little things as long as they are creative. But my movie is the biggest personal project so far. Hopefully it opens a few doors to doing more funded narrative film.

ufoclub, I haven't seen your movie (I'm on a slow net connection), but when you were trying to get it made, did you consider crowdfunding? (like Kickstarter, etc.)? If not, why not?

Nope...stuck at an office instead. Much rather be traveling around the world and write, film, take pictures. I'm at a point where I realize my dreams of becoming a travel journalist is not gonna come true unless I take a serious shot at it. Maybe I'll take the year of 2017 off to travel and write.

Nope, I'm not currently happy with where I'm at, but I haven't given up trying to change it. For now, I'm just collecting a paycheck, but I do have an interview today that could give me the chance to exercise my creative powers and make a difference, so keep your fingers crossed for me!!

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Easy answer: I did not use crowdfunding because the movie first started as a short film project before crowdfunding even appeared on the internet. It was before Kickstarter.

That initial push to make it as a short film was financed by a guy who wanted to be a film producer and was wealthy enough to just come up with $12K himself to fund a 20 minute film. He came to me to direct it after scoping out my work and hanging out with me for a while. He also let me write the script based on his initial story idea.

I ended up putting together enough material for a 40 minute piece, and then based on the fact that at the time a fininshed feature film seemed potentially more of a career builder, I decided to go rogue and make it into an 80 minute feature. I slowly, in my spare time outside of a full time job and freelance projects, paid minimally to shoot each new scene I wrote one at a time. Then I did almost all the post production myself at home, self teaching myself the steps. It's been really slow.

For the next project, I will be collaborating with a friend in LA. But I don't think we'll crowdfund that either. He has different friends that always fund his creative projects as producers (much like the guy funded my film initially).

For my own solo projects here on out: I do want to try Kickstarter for my next short film (a short would be a good testing ground). And I want more money so I can hire talented help instead of slowly doing everything myself.

PS, "Dominator201", is your internet too slow for Youtube or Netlfix videos to play? Or is it just Vimeo that won't play?

Youtube is too slow, yes. Vimeo videos never seem to be come down when I've tried them couple of times in another place (not my home, where the slow net is).

Oh, and we don't have Netflix in India. I'm not even too sure what it IS!

Thanks! I believe I did well. I stumbled on one question but that's only because it really didn't make that much sense to me. I asked for clarification and it still didn't make sense. Nonetheless, it was answered, but I hope it doesn't cast a shadow over my whole impression. I got a lot of head nod's and "oh yes'", agreeing with most of what I said. We shall see what happens!

Such a loaded question. What would "where I want to be" even look like? I still haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up. lol

But...my job (I'm a copywriter) has gotten a lot more creative in the last year. The powers that be at the company where I work finally figured out what I can do - despite my telling them for years - and have given me work that is more in line with my talent. So while I'm not making the kind of money I'd like (and that I should be making), I'm more satisfied. And that's a HUGE step up from where I was before.

I'm doing a play right now - with another one coming up next month, and possibly a non-dancing role with a local ballet company in December. Two more auditions for very promising opportunities later this season, too.

I also have a stack of patterns and fabric that I want to turn into clothing at some point. There just isn't enough time!

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
