Was James Harrison Right for Giving Back his Sons Trophies? To me, he was. I was raised the same way. Giving kids awards for "participating" rubs me the wrong way and sends a bad message.

I was raised by a no nonsense Father. He had no tolerance for b.s. however, these awards didn't exist when I was being raised. So I can't say for sure he would've taken this approach. I don't have children, but I believe if I did, their ages and to a certain extent, the obstacles they have overcome, would determine if I allowed them to accept these trophies. Btw did Mr. Harrison explain why he shared this information with the world? Was a question posed to him about his parenting?

I remember my kids receiving certificates of participation (or a button or ribbon), which I had no problem with, but not whole trophies for just showing up. No I don't think he's wrong, that's just taking things too far on the self-esteem issue. And burning money that could be put toward other things just because. What about the kids that bust their azz to achieve, how do you distinguish the difference? I know some people have natural abilities where they don't need to bust their azz, and there are those that bust their azz and never hit the bar, but just awarding everyone isn't a solution, it just lazy, imho.

I don't think it's terrible for the kids. He has plenty of other opportunities to instill good qualities in his children. It's good for the "last on the bench" player to be recognized too, after all, they probably attended all practices also. There are trophies for the outstanding players ie MVP or captain. I would rather let everyone feel good about participating. We'll never know how much that means to that benchwarmer. My kids first basketball team played a team which had been together for awhile and got beaten without scoring a point. I couldnt understand why the ref wouldnt blow phantom fouls and let the kids try to score from the free throw line. Let everyone feel good about themselves. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I agree...it's better to teach kids that in life, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. You get no awards for losing.

Maybe the kid on the bench may not need rewarding for sitting on the bench but encouragement to find another avenue for his talents maybe he's being stifled from seeking out the rewards of struggle and growth. Seems to me if one parent has opportunities to instill certain values so do other parents, why put that on everyone else?

I had to do chores for free. If you didn't go to school and do your homework you got "the belt" as a reward. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
