Thinking of doing away with television..... I don't watch t.v. very much, usually just a show at night once I've settled in and mostly I just have it on while I'm cleaning my house, sort of listening as I go, but, I don't know if it's good to constantly be bombarded with commercials talking about cancer and side effects of medications and medical conditions etc. , not to mention that unless I'm watching the History channel or Science channel, it's a lot of mindless crap. As far as commercials go, I know these are real issues, I just don't think it's good to constantly fill one's head space with impending doom, or on lighter side- constantly being sold something. I think I may just keep internet but lose the t.v. ---- Has anyone done this? Did you get more done with it gone? read more? or found yourself bored wishing you could watch t.v.? Thoughts?

If it's mindless crap compared to the history channel I can't even begin to imagine. Definately chuck that box out. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I like some aspects of what television can offer. There's a lot of useless crap which I wish my cable company would stop forcing me to have. Id like to have only what interests me n not 100 useless channels n 50 I watch.

i dumped my TV five years ago and don't miss it a bit. especially those mind-bogglingly stupid ads that come on every seven minutes.... anyway a while back i switched to internet and streaming. avoid the ads, avoid the programming for the masses. just my 2c

YES!!! that's what I mean, mostly- THE ADVERTISING EVERY TWO SECONDS! that is driving me crazy- I watched a thirty minute show the other day and I swear there were 8 different commercials every 7 minute interval-- ridiculous! ---- And also, a lot is MY fault- If there is some crap on, I will settle on the crap once I see that there is nothing interesting on the other 500 channels... Better to just do without it and get Netflix (People keep telling me that's what I need to do) and have internet...No one seems to regret losing their t.v. so might be the best thing to do....

I will miss shows like "Alone" (anyone watching that? great!) and "The Last Alaskans," but the rest of that crap I can do without....

. agree! stupid and annoying. i really think that some TV programming reduces a person's ability to THINK. [Edited 8/20/15 10:04am]

I still have free TV but rarely look at it. Never had cable and never will. There's plenty of free shows on the internet. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

TV sucks ass! My husband and I love baseball and basketball and we also enjoy golf and tennis. We watch Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and The Walking Dead, and I'm a huge Jeopardy fan, but that's really about all. We love to watch movies too. We also try to pvr most shows so we can ff through all the ridiculous advertisements. We are NOT fans of reality tv - thank God!

There is a ton of "useless" crap, and it repeats itself over and over again. How long can one sit and watch other people buying wedding dresses, or catch crabs? The infomercials that take up a large percentage of some stations, the stations that are nothing but infomercials. TV is for sports fans, you can always find a ton of sports, outside of that, there are other alternatives. There are a lot of shows I enjoy, but the price of paying for tv just to catch the shows I enjoy is gotten completely out of hand. Speaking of advertising, heck, the morning news is always trying to sell you something, seems like getting ready for work in the morning I miss the traffic, weather, and general what's happening in my city reports, but I always see the segments of some new product or service demonstration or the new hot place to go segment, which are repeated several times throughout the show. We've moved to streaming. In the end (including sports) we decided we could live without cable. I've forgotten the plots of some movies because commercials have been so long and continuous. If you've been over to phunkdaddy's thread about Direct-TV, I spoke of our set-up. I've always been a newspaper reader, most of my current events / news comes from that. Shit-stirring TV news... posing as journalism is the worst.

Yep- All of the above is true- I'm done with it- Going to try Netflix so I can occasionally watch something. It's true that even local news is one big infomercial. There's a local plastic surgeon that is on there ALL THE TIME spouting nose jobs, boob jobs, neck lifts, ----- I'm always thinking, "What the fuck?!!! Why is this always on the NEWS?!!" smh at what television has come to.....

I enjoy watching things like porn and whatnot.

don't get me started on the porn on my t.v- I have Comcast and the TITLES!!! Good God! The titles of some of the porn they offer are seriously troubling -- I would give some examples but I'm a lady....

For local channels you could also get an HD antenna. I think that is what they are called. Fuck cable.

I watch TV for basically two reasons: Sports and sitcoms "Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

I'm going to see about the HD antenae --- I could make it if I had at least one or two channels for times when I feel like vegging out. I saw the season finale of "Alone" last night (which was amazing!) so now I'm free to let it go... I was just waiting to see how that ended...

here in India, i cut cable back in Feb cause i came to the conclusion that there was nothing on it for me, EXCEPT music videos. hollywood output is 90% aimed at teenagers, and i just don't LIKE that stuff anymore, i'm too old for it.
i agree totally with whoever said that TV like this rots your brain.
and also, now in India there are the rise of "web TV shows" on youtube, a couple of which were revolutionary - i only heard about them a few days back, guess where, in the NEWSPAPER!! indian TV is coming of age.... free from the shackles of ratings, as the article said.....

Go for it. I haven't watched TV since December, and haven't owned one since December 2013. It's a long, complicated, beautiful story, but all in all, I'm ok. To be honest, there are times I wish I had one. I do plan on buying one, maybe Black Friday, There are some shows I'd like to watch. But in the 2 years I haven't had a TV, and until a few months ago a car, I found life has a lot to offer if you're living it. I would ride my bike around new areas, cities I didn't know; if I saw a hole in the wall restaurant that looked good, I'd try it, if I wanted to lay down at the park underneath the trees, I'd do that. Not having a TV I feel has made me smarter in a way. I started reading books again. I also noticed I engage and appreciate communication with others more. Life is beautiful. It's for living. Sure, if you fill the niche of some shows they're great (I love food, so I used to watch Food Network), but really I feel like TVs are idiot boxes; ultimately, they drain you and make you feel bad about yourself, the constant barrage of commercials trying to sell you things you don't really need, previews of other shows/movies that just fill up the time in your day, "reality TV". It's fucking garbage. Go outside. Take a walk. I have a full time job, am thinking of getting a part time job on the side, have a band that rehearses and performs, play baseball with guys from work, and I'm writing my first book that I plan on getting published. I'm 27 this month by the way. I don't play video games either. I'm in a much happier place in my life right now. Of course, the downside of all of this is the data on my phone bill went through the roof because I'm always on YouTube or certain purple fansites.

MonsterZeroTwo---- Thank you for that! Interesting but completely makes sense! Good luck on your book, by the way. That's something I've always wanted to do- write a book- maybe I will once television is gone ------ Yes, t.v. shows have just become crap mostly, especially since now is so much reality b.s. I did love "Alone" even though it was a reality show and my guilty pleasure is "Little Women L.A." but I can do without those and probably should. I AM trying to read more and do hope I can do that once t.v. is gone

I think the quality of television overall is very high right now. Over the last few years, I've very much enjoyed watching Mad Men, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Orphan Black, Masters of Sex, Boardwalk Empire among many others. [Edited 8/28/15 16:14pm]

Gotta agree--in recent years, since The Sopranos, cable has come out with some stellar shows that got me watching again. But, I watch these series without subscribing to cable TV. Also, PBS & the BBC carrying on their tradition of excellent series I've watched since I was 12 years old...
