These things provide good opportunities for thought experiments though. After all, there are people who have in the past (and maybe today) do believe this.

I always thought the flat earth society was just a laugh though. An excuse for socially awkward people to get together ala, re enactment groups or the real ale society.

Let's go back to the days of Christopher Columbus. He observed ships sailing to the horizon, and then slowly sinking out of view.

You can replicate this same experiment at any shoreline. You'll see the same thing Columbus saw.

If the Earth is flat, why do the ships sink out of view? Wouldn't they disappear all at once when they were too far away to be seen?

Ha!

If you look up video's on the topic, you'll see just the opposite. You'll see the ship gradually be out of sight, you will NOT see the top of the ship with the front of it leaning forward as your supposed to see with the earths curvature. If you do some research with an open mind, the flat earth is starting to look like a slam dunk.

^Still, that doesn't answer the question why old Chris thought he could reach India by sailing westwards.

From Anchorage, Alaska at an elevation of 102 feet, on clear days Mount McKinley can be seen with the naked eye from 130 miles away. If Earth were a ball 25,000 miles in circumference, Mount McKinley’s 20,320 foot summit should be leaning back away from the observer and almost half covered by 9,220 feet of curved Earth. In reality, however, the entire mountain can be quite easily seen standing straight from base to summit.

Yes. As long as the irregular contouring of your skull has limited brain cell growth to being below the threshold that such a belief requires.

"Christopher Columbus"??? oh gosh...please don't tell me you still believe in that fake America expidition??? please say it ain't so joe!

Columbus - if he existed - went to India. nothing more. a continent called America does not exist in reality. LOL you've been punk'd!

The ones in power, the elites know that in order to really control the world, the masses need to be misled.

a made up continent no one has ever seen in person, just invented to sell the people everything from Coca Cola and Hollywood movies up to Hip Hop. it's also nice to have an artificial bogeyman who they can blame all problems of world politics and econmy.

Financial... the European Union trading budget with the "US" is upwards to 80-90 gazillion dollars per day.(note that US dollar itself of course doesn't exist either)

and yes, I have travelled to so called "America" several times. the first time of course they tried to stop me, just like in the Truman show (flight delayed? yeah sure, I believe ya...) but then in the end they flew me to some obviously made up scenerey like from a cheap movie, just filled with actors.

the Statue of Liberty? yeah, a hologram, impressive well made I admit. and I can see how this could fool the untrained eye. not me though.

I've also seen the fake Mayflower and Pilgrims village (they don't even claim this is all real, cause it is so obvious LOL)

the powers in control really put a lot of effort into this, I have to give them that. actually my wife is "Canadian" originally from "Quebec", but now living in Austria (sure, she has no other choice! Quebec does no exist! do you still need more proof?).

I might also add that Austria is actually the ONLY country that exists, made by God as the center of the universe. woot!

so obviously my wife is one of "them" and part of the conspiracy. damn, she even presented me a family from "Canada". obviously all actors.

but she can't fool me. I observe her closely. and one day she's gonna make a mistake and accidentially expose the secret.

and as soon as that happens I will update you all right here in this forum. from then on history books will have to be re-written! nod

Fallen off the edge??? LOL nope..not possible, when the oceans are surrounded by 100-200 foot mountains of ice.

I liike the way you replied to the post...you attacked it directly with specific evidence to prove that it's wrong and you stayed away from personal attacks...very proud of you Lust

Surveyors, engineers and architects are never required to factor the supposed curvature of the Earth into their projects. Canals, railways, bridges and tunnels for example are always cut and laid horizontally, often over hundreds of miles without any allowance for curvature.

Ask the engineers and architects, if they need to account for the earths curvature when laying railroad tracks? LOL not exactly..they'll say thats something you just read about in text books etc.. In reality, those tracks better be STRAIGHT 100% of the time for hundreds of miles!

I never said they were in on the lie. We as a society have been brainwashed in to believing the earth is round. People go about their daily lives without even giving it a second thought.

My bosses son is a pilot. I'm gonna ask him next time i see him if when he achieves altitude and sets the cruise control, does he just flight straight or does he have to adjust for the earths curvature?

Your altimeter and auto-pilot are going to adjust for the curvature. As you fly, your craft will adjust accordingly to maintain your pre-set altitude.

Duh.... gravity. Its that force that keeps us down and acts perpendicular to the earths surface. A plane requires x amount of lift to remain y feet above the ground. Gravity (g) is always constant, so as long as x is constant, y will remain constant. No need to correct anything to account for curvature because g is always acting at right angles to the curved surface. How does gravity work on your flat earth? You do know you wouldn't have any right? As I'm sure you are aware, the mass of any object causes space to curve three dimensionally. This means that the greater the mass, the greater the 3d curvature. And as you will know, the only natural state that can be derived from this natural phenomenon comes in the shape of a sphere. Have a read.... take a look..... Einstein might be a good starting point.... there are many mathematical examples of why the only possible shape the earth, or any large celestial body can be, is spherical.
