A lot of softwares or apps we download to our gadgets are spying on us. I'm relatively new to the whole mobile world and downloading apps and such. I'm surprised at the number of apps that want access to your phone or tablet camera. What the hell do they need that for? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

hey, i'm on Windows 10 right now why delete Ryan Adam's Glastonbury set BBC? i bloody love Ryan Adams.
Hang on a sec, i'm just checking Windows 10 for Ryan Adams, navigating around this giant Fifty Cent face... ah wait, no... crossfading with Deadmau5.
What Windows 10 has failed to achieve is automatic injectiion of sound into the ear baps, though it is a kernel's wet dream to have an operating system dictate the sounds you want to hear...
what do you want to hear?

This is actually TRUE - I was watching a TV program about this the other day - they have Kinects checking to see your responses to ad posters in a bus stand in London, and apparently they're working out how to use biometrics - ie. if you see a ad and your heart rate goes up, your Apple watch could report that to the advertiser.....

we have not seen anything yet... soon our clothing will tell stores we are in that we need new shoes...AND the stores will use tricks to lure us to the shoe department.
Look at how shops are now... ever notice that in some places if you walk close to a display the lights get brighter? That is NOT to save electricity... it is to make you look. "oh look a bright light... oh snap ice cream..." "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Out of curiosity - when apps DO do that, does the OS (android etc.) pop up some type of box asking for YOUR confirmation?

i don't think people are necessarily stupid, but most who are loving the experience of spotlighting themselves on social media were too young to experience or learn the lesson of the mccarthy era in america....

The US goverment and goverment computer contractors have been developing "back door" software to access computer / computer servers to my knowledge since the late 70's early 80's.
That being said...
I wouldn't touch Win OS 10 with a ten foot pole. I agree with Graycap, the utter stupidity of the American People appears to have no bounds, this is an indictment on the American educational system. Computer and/or sofware companies are playing the role of the Devil at the crossroads.
The sad thing is people do have alternatives...
I''m primarily a Linux user. I don't use any Cloud services from Apple, Google, Microsoft , or any of the upteem free (limited GB) Cloud services. The Cloud services I do use are hardware/ software I've purchased for our home. I'll never own a Chromebook or any Android devices. When Google made everyone sign up to Google +, I stopped using my YouTube accounts and I never signed in. I have Chrome on one HDD that's swapped in when needed, but its a Linux notebook. Everyone should have a paid VPN, because free VPN"s versions are basically useless.

Yes. Before you download the app, it does state what information that it will access on your phone or tablet. Any app that says it needs to access my contacts, camera or microphone, I absolutely will not download. I think these permissions are pretty common on social media apps and a lot of people don't mind since they live a good part of their lives on these sites. Except for FB once in a blue moon, I'm not a social media butterfly. But, there are many other apps that ask to access personal information. And like someone else stated, it continues to amaze me that it seems like the average person is not really bothered by these intrusions by apps, Google, Apple and now Microsoft. It's just the way of the world. If you want to be mobile, the trade off is your privacy. Hell, I'm still outraged that someone can google my name, find my address, a list of people who live at the address and a picture of the house!!! People aren't outraged about that either. ^ Free apps you may not have an option to disable what info that which to access on you smartphone/tablet/iPod. If you purchase an app, you can choose to disable info whatever info or date they want to access on your phone / tablet. mobile. For example my VIOP service asked if they could access my photos on my phone and tablet... needless to say I said no. If you download a free app always check what information they are accessing before you use it. If you think its intrusive you can uninstall the app.
As I said everyone should read the terms of condition all software the decided to download free or purchsed.

I knew when I was typing...
TP-Link, ?
VPN who?
Home Cloud Systems, you can purchase off the shelf.
Lima Kickstart & Lima Website.
MD- Cloud I meant to say WD-MyCloud.
Streaming Hardware / minus Internet
MD-MyCloud works will with Windows. It can and does work with Apple but it can be a little tricky. Apple hasn't made it easy to setup a WD - MyCloud because they want you to use iCloud. The other draw back, it takes WD a minute to update their firmware whenever Apple upgrades their OS X & iOS software. I'd wait to purchase a My Cloud until it supports Win 10 and OS X El Capitan... unless you plan to stay with previous Win or OS X OS.
By all means support, Electronic Frontier Foundation & Prism ~ Break.
Let me say this... if the US NSA seems they all knowing, they aren't. They NSA and/or computer companies have been able to capitalize on Americans lack of knowledge... most folks computers are WIDE OPEN. They'd like you to think there's nothing you can do about it... that's not true. Its code and people write code.
I'm not a hand-wringer, I'm not afraid, nor paranoid about what can find out what. What I'm saying is we have a Constitution ( Bill of Rights) that's supposed to protect us from the abuse or tyranny of the state. Should companies be able to access or date for their gain and do whatever they please? I'll give you an example...
You're a Linux user, you don't have a Google, Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft, or Twitter account. Why should these companies be able to access your computer and/or router when you don't use their services? If they can use your data for profit... it seems to me you should be paid. Hell, if you do use their products, in some instances I think those folks should get a cut of the profits.
Should People Get Paid For Online Data
I see an Internet that has become constricted, information that was once readily avaiable is not longer online. The net has become a mass algorithm to sale folks stuff and only show what some would wish use to see and read. (IMHO)
