Can anyone recommend a really effective tool for cleaning AdWare and SpyWare off my machine?

I think one of my p2p programs has installed a bunch of crap on my machine, such that pop-ups occur even when I'm not browsing! mad

Anyone have a good experience with clean-up software?

Yes!

Also, I don't trust any of the spyware and adware removers... there are way to many shared files that get inadvertently removed... happens all the time to my roommate. He has re-installed his OS more times than I can count, lol.

He uses Ad-aware, you can get it here: http://download.com.com/3...ag=lst-0-1

It shouldn't be to hard, Teller.. Just make sure that you back up your entire drive...

Or try Lleena's suggestion, first.

Well...I had to run it several times and reboot a few times before it reported that my machine was clean. Apparently I had a bunch of unwelcome guests living on my machine.

So far I haven't seen a pop-up, but I think it may take a few days before I know how well it's doing.

Thx for the tip! biggrin

Yeah it appears to be 6.0 now...

My new PC isn't so new anymore, but it hung in there for quite awhile before getting eaten up with these ads. I think they should be flat out illegal...these things are nothing more than viruses! mad

Moonbeam

I had this annoying "E-Anthology" and "Stop Sign" thing come up for me, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not delete it. I did a little research and found that it was suspect. I downloaded Adaware but it didn't help. sad

Eventually, though, it just stopped coming back, which was nice. biggrin

What may have happened is this...some pop ups are VERY deceitful and ask you twice if you want something. The first ad will come up and to avoid getting the service, you need to click "No" but then another will pop up asking "Are you sure?" You may have just been sick of pop ups (like I often am) and automatically clicked "No" when you should have clicked "Yes."

1.) Use Kazaa Lite instead of Kazaa. Do a search on yahoo and you will find it.

2.) Go to Start, select "Run" and type "msconfig". Then hit Enter. At the "General" tab, choose "selective startup". Now click the "startup" tab. This is a list of all the programs that load each time you boot up. Take a look at the list and see if there are any suspicious files. For example, if you saw something like "Navapw32.exe", you could do a search on yahoo for that to find out what it is. Stuff like RealPlayer and Quicktime, and Acrobat you can safely disable by removing the check from the box.

3.) You might also want to pick up a copy of Webroot's Window Washer. It wont remove spyware but it will clean junk files off your computer.

4.) Also, try JV16 Powertools at http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php. With this you can clean your registry out. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully.

5.) Lastly, try Meaya Popup Ad Filter. It works great!
