hmmm. i think there are decisions to be made every day. there are outside influences and things beyond our control. but ultimately the more we back away from challenges the more we are letting ourselves down. yes you can choose who you are, but the world, the universe will always get involved somehow...unless you're looking to make yourself a recluse with possible mental problems.

i think that unless you go out and confront the forces of the world with who you really want to be, the world confronts you with an entropy of who you really are.

The more you take charge, make decisions and act, the more of a causal agent you become. The less you do so, the more you are prone to just being blown about like a leaf in the wind.

well this is exactly the kind of thing that interests me. did i decide upon this orgname...or was it implanted in my consciousness through an osmosis-like process by the universe for a particular reason?

I love this, it's like we should rename this thread "Deep thoughts with Penis".

Jokes aside, define "the universe will always get involved" for somene that doesn't know what "the universe" is or how it could get involved.

I think that it is more a case of the name choosing you rather than you choosing it. It was chosen by the gods..more than likely.

Right... but isn't it our decisions that we make and how we choose to handle situations or instances, that are thrown at us, that ultimately make us who we are, and not so much the universe, but rather the decisions of those around us? Or, is that what you meant by "universe"?

That is what I mean by "the universe"...all that affects us, that we come into contact with, be it physical or mental. My question could be rephrased as, "do you decide who you are or do OTHERS?"

Gotcha... sorry, my head it somewhere else today.

Okay... I think we decide who we are then, based upon our choices and our actions to those around us and situations that present themselves.

yes, but the world and not just the world, the series of events which came from the big-bang up until your life at this very moment - the ever-changing universe...does it essentially shape your very being. Or is your very being a product of an essential YOU? i guess I am asking whether there is an outside force which impacts on our consciousness or not? sometimes i really wonder. i think we all do...hence the world's religions and the problems of existence.

Obviously both you and the universe exert causality on each other.

I don't know... I don't think there is an outside force that impacts our consciousness. I think we are who we are, and that others may influence us and help us along in who we are, but ultimately we decide who we are going to be and who we are at that very moment. We can change at any time, it's up to us if we are willing to, or want to for that matter.

I think the world's religions are there for many as a form of support and to not feel so lost or to have questions about existence; they find their answer out of a book... wait, are you talking about god here?

Okay...

I think that if you have faith in something enough... god even, that one could say that he/she does intervene in times when it is needed, but I feel that it isn't god that does that, but ourselves. I think we fail to see how powerful we are.
