Even Cowgirls Get The Blues 5 stars out of 5

This movie came and went very fast in my town and I missed it on its original run. I've always wanted to see it being a big Tom Robbins (the author of the book) fan, Gus Van Sant fan and Uma Thurman fan. And after finally seeing it, I have no idea why the critics panned it. It captures the spirit of the book beautfully, Uma Thurman is easy on the eyes, and the whole film is very funny!

The Fantastic 4 reboot is probably the worst reboot since the Rebooting of Superman. The flick moved slow and the cast is forgettable. I always wonder what goes through the Director's mind when he watches the final-edit. Studios can Cast Pretty people all they want to but it takes more than sex-appeal to sell a movie. If I wanna watch "Sexy" I'll watch Free-Porn. Fantastic 4 is a made-for-TV flick.

The Party 5 stars out of 5

A swingin' 60s comedy where Peter Sellers plays a sitar playing Indian actor who gets invited by mistake to a Hollywood party. Sellers is genius. Directed by Blake Edwards who would go on to work with Sellers on the original Pink Panther movies.

We introduce a new feature - Movies That I Watched Only The First And Last 10 Minutes! Or, I Have A Short Attention Span. Today's installment is the Paul Newman vehicle "Hud".

I've been on a Paul Newman kick lately, meaning I've been thinking he's a pretty cool guy. For some reason, someone in my house DVR'ed "The Drowning Pool", which my wife watched. I caught some of it but frankly it was too boring. Not even worth a smarmy review, IMO. But it did kick in the Paul Newman Is Cool mindset.

So "Hud" came on and I went "Whoop! What we have here is a failure to communicate!" To which my son replied, "Wrong movie, dad. You're thinking of Cool Hand Luke". Bummer! Oh well, "Hud" sound cool.

It's not. To wit:

First 10 minutes = Paul Newman is a shiftless dude who doesn't get along with his dad. A cow dies.

Last 10 minutes = All the cows get shot; Patricia Neal leaves; the dad dies; the kid leaves; Paul Newman inherits a dust farm.

WTF?

"Hud" only gets 4 Paul Newman smirk out of an endless supply of Paul Newman smirks.

SIDENOTE: I read the Wikipedia summary of this movie, and I'm glad I didn't watch the middle. It said Paul Newman was surprised that the audiences passed right over Hud's inherent arrogance and instead saw him as a hero. I know why, though. The movie poster says Paul Newman is "Hud"! like you're supposed to be excited. You would only be excited if Hud! was a good guy.

That's why we have Jeb! Bush.

Whiplash 3.5/5 for me this movie could have been great if were given the time to flesh itself out like in a miniseries, giving the audience time to connect to the complication of the characters. I think it plays very well for young adults, but it is primarily full of surface cliches and very predictable, but the ending seems to give, me at least, the impression there is a wealth of story going on underneath. It definitely held my attention.

-----------Me too, I've seen it more times that I can count. This is the real meaning of a comedy. Absolutely pure genius.

I have never been much of a fan of The Who. I think they're boring. So why would a movie about them be any different?

Sadly, it wouldn't be. But we found that out the hard way when we watched most of "Lambert and Stamp", a movie about the two guys that managed The Who.

It had a great premise - Lambert and Stamp were two guys that wanted to get into movies but they couldn't get hired as directors. So they decided they'd find a real good rock band, make them famous, and film everything during the process, which would become their first movie and get their movie careers going. Pretty good idea! Especially considering they knew absolutely nothing about the music business. This should be interesting!

But the execution of the movie stunk. It's a documentary and has the exceptional advantage of having all the good stuff it's about actually filmed at the time. Because, apparently, the two guys DID film everything they did as they met The Who and began managing them. However, we never see any of the behind-the-scenes stuff, or how the two guys learned how to book a rock band, or any other clever things they must have done to turn The Who into a famous band.

This movie really needed a plot. I didn't stick around to see who directed it but if it was Lambert (I guess Stamp is dead because he was never interviewed in the movie. One guy said "It's too bad Stamp isn't here to provide his point of view" but with a statement like that, can you really tell if Stamp is dead, or just mad at everyone? Typically British!), then Lambert was lucky he got into rock and roll. Because whoever DID direct this snooze-fest has no idea how to take adavantage of interesting things.

We quit watching this movie with about 40 minutes left and then watched an episode of "Saturday Night Live" that was just as unfunny as "Lambert and Stamp". No wonder I had boring dreams last night.

"Lambert and Stamp" gets 1 1/2 smashed guitars out of 5 smashed guitars.

This was the Best Foreign Language Oscar winner.

Artily and beautifully shot. Moving, but the subject matter is very, very sad. Not for the faint of heart.
