Equilibrium

Saw "Equilibrium" at the cinema last night. Mildly entertaining, in an MTV kind of way.

Of course there will be the obvious comparisons with "The Matrix", "Minority Report" and possibly even "Fight Club". Which is no surprise - the movie is a fairly cynical paint-by-numbers approach to making a hit by taking some of the coolest bits from recent blockbusters.

The only thing that bugged me is that it is clearly a modern take on Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four" - which is fine, it's a fabulous book. However the movie adaptations - the 1954 version featuring Peter Cushing, or indeed the 1984 version featuring John Hurt - were both vastly superior, and far more effective, without all the guns and samurai swords and stuff.

I suppose it's "1984" for the MTV generation. With guns. It's alright, a bit silly but some good action sequences make it reasonably entertaining.

Anyone else see it?
