Universal hatred for Jem and the Holograms trailer

If you were a kid in 80s, you were remember the cartoon Jem which was usually sandwiched between the Transfromers and GI Joe. The show featured Jerrica Benton, half owner of Starlight records, caretaker of Starlight Foundation, an orphanage for teen girls and lead singer of the band the Holograms a racially diverse all girl group. Jerrica used a Synergy, a super computer that could project realistic holograms to assumed her alternate identity Jem, a pop star. The show was sci fi, adventure, musicial soap opera primarily aimed at girls. If you were boy who loved Transformers and GI Joe, you probably watched or were at last familiar with Jem. I only watched a handful of episodes, but its one of the shows that sticks in your brain because it was so different from any other cartoon out at the time.

Universal Studios announced plans to make a live action feature film of Jem. And now that the trailer has debut to almost universal hatred. Instead of Jerrica being a young woman who owned her own company she is a mopy, shy teenager living with her aunt. The sci fi, adventure element is gone. There are no the Misfits , Jem's arch nemesis. There is no Synergy, the super computer who projects the holograms and gives Jem her secret identity.

Comic book writer Christie Marks, creator of Jem, wasn't even aware of the movie until a week before it was announced. She had no input in the film.

There are quite a few complaints about a biracial actress with straight hair being cast to play band member Shayna who was dark skined with natural curly hair.

A lot of feminists are mad because they took a show about independent, strong willed young women and turned them into passive, teen girls who have their image given to them by the record label. I don't think I've seen a movie with so much hatred and controversy surrounding. I think Unviersal underestimated the fanbase of the show.

I wasn't a kid in the 80s but I still watched Jem. Please point me in the direction of the bums that perpetrated this outrage and I'll give them what for.

On a side note I collect dolls and I"m looking for the 17" Jem doll.

Yeah, they really underestimated the fan base. Apparently, millennials grew up watching Jem on the Hub network which played a lot of 80s cartoons. And there are teens right now who got into the show through Netflix. The show has fans ranging from pre teen to mid forties and they all know exactly what Jem is about. Also, alot of guys watched the show because it played right in the middle of cartoons aimed at boys. The studio potentially could have had a wide demographic ready to watch this movie if they stayed faithful to the source material. Big mistake.

This was my favorite cartoon as a child, even had my mom buy me a pair of pink earrings, however, watching the trailer, they really have succeeded in watering it down. confused

I kinda hope this movie just tanks, because other than stealing a few character names (and MAYBE hair colour?), it has nothing to do with the original story. Not even if you set the story in 2015.

I knew there would be issues when they made it live-action, but OH MAN.

Don't mess with my Jem.
