I got my book for book club!

Heh, my Amazon order arrived today with the book we're supposed to read for 2the9s book group... except that the copy they sent me was misprinted! The first page is page 27, and it starts mid-sentence... and halfway through the book there is the dedication, the index and page 1, 2. 3 etc. Ridiculous!

I went to a large bookshop located in my local shopping centre. I saw other titles by the said author but not "Waiting for the barbarians." So I asked at the desk only to be met by a rather large and rude man who told me they don't have it and if I wanted I could order it. This takes 5-10 days he said. When I registered some anxiety he said "DO you want it or not?" I said. "Listen big guy, of course I want it but since you have your panties in a bunch I am not going to buy it from you. Go suck an egg."

Actually I didn't say the last bit...but I will try somewhere else, I prefer to buy it like this or I may order it online if I can't. Why did you have to choose this book? Grrr.

big grin

I think that we should choose a different book! But don't tell 2the9s, and he will be the only one posting a review of this one!

fight Lleena

teller: the books that I suggested on that other thread were those that I had on my bookshelves within arms reach that I haven't read and that were relatively short (especially the latter).

Since I didn't get much feedback ( evil ), I went ahead and chose the Coetzee book because from what I know of it, it deals with many of the issues that are frequently discussed here: race, empire, power etc. I thought it would be interesting for that reason.

I've also heard Coetzee speak a number of times and I've been curious to actually read him. smile

I haven't started the book yet, but I hope that people find it worth their time and are willing to plow through it and contribute even if they aren't thrilled with the choice.

This is really a test run and I hope that in the future we will be able to choose books that are of a greater appeal and yet have an engaging subject matter. Some of those other suggestions seemed really interesting.

Hell, I'd even be willing to read Ayn Rand! smile
