Do you think that it is possible for someone to be extremely intelligent but not well spoken?

Do you think that it would be possible for a person to have a very high IQ and to be extremely intelligent but have a hard time speaking in public? I wonder if it is possible for a person who sometimes has trouble putting the right words together to actually be a very smart person.

What do you think?

Yes. Not only possible, but a fact.
I know a few of them. They do very well, and express themselves in other ways besides words.

What if they are just really nervous? Smart people are not necessarily brave... and the loud ones are not always the most intelligent...

Of course. I have known a few people who were extremely intelligent but the nervousness and anxiety of being in front of a large group of people made them stutter and not come across very well.

All of these people went to Dale Carnegie to learn how to speak in front of a group of people and it helped two of them quite a lot.

For the record, I think that it is EXTREMELY common for someone to be extremely intelligent but to have trouble speaking and coming across as intelligent as they are.

One major anxiety I had growing up, was that I spoke (still do to some degree) pigeon English...Hawaii-style. I didn't realize how much of an impact it would have on me, until I started getting into my teens. My father and I would visit my brother in California during the Christmas holidays, and the people around me would always made fun of the way I spoke. One person even told me that the way I speak makes me sound dumb, like I was totally uneducated because of the way I spoke.

Sorry for rambling, this was hard to explain.

Ooh, that sucks. See... that is my point. Someone can be very intelligent, yet have trouble communicating with others at times but that doesn't make them dumb.

Well, I wouldn't exactly include myself in the category of 'extremely' intelligent, but when I had my IQ tested it was in the higher range..and I have *major* problems speaking in public due to my shyness. That includes even small groups of people that I don't know, or know well. I just become so nervous I clam up or, when I do try to speak, I stammer and can't think straight and come off as a real idiot. sad

I'd also like to point out that there are intelligent people who have problems speaking or expressing their thoughts due to other factors, like medications. Certain medications can affect mental clarity or make it harder for the person to form coherent thoughts, etc. I know this for a fact because it's happened to me. In my mind I am still the same as I used to be, I still KNOW all the information and skills I did before, but certain medications I've had to take have affected my thought process and my spelling (I catch the mistakes later when I proofread, but I've noticed how nowadays when I write I will often mix up words like waist/waste, site/sight, etc.) Also sometimes, when speaking, I will know the word I wish to use but the word will just NOT come through from my brain to my mouth (if that makes any sense. I'm not sure the best way to describe this...) It's like the wiring in my brain is shorting out. For instance, I can see a chair, and want to try to say the word "chair", but the word won't come. It's not like stuttering, though, this is different. It's like a brain fog. I look rather dumb standing there, apparantly searching my brain and grasping for the word to describe this common object. It's both frustrating and embarassing. I know people have thought me simpleminded when I experience that and I'm truly not dumb..my brain just doesn't seem to work the same way it used to before the medication. sad

My little sister...who is 16 is just the totaly opposite.
She was diagnosed as being border line mentally retarded with a IQ of 80. However she is perfectly normal and has no features of being mentally retarded. The problem with
this is her school. The girl is smart, however her teachers continue to place her in the "slow" student classes so to speak. Irritates the hell out of me. She has learned how to deal with this "handicap" so to speak and yet her school continues to do this to her. Granted she struggles with stuff sometimes, but she is a freshman in high school for god sakes I wish they would stop treating her like she was still in 6th grade. Hell when she was choosing the classes she wanted to take in high school they basically did not let her take the ones she picked and put here where they wanted her. mad

So yes I do think it is possible for someone to be extremely intelligent but not well spoken. However I think it is possible to be not as intelligent and be well spoken. Cause let me tell you the girl knows how to write a speech and speak it well. As a matter of fact she told me so far that speech was her favorite class, because her teacher for once did not look down on her and treat her less then the other students cause she was not "as" intelligent as the rest.
