Do you own a gun? Would you like to?

Hmmm. . .? If so, what have you done to ensure safety? If not, why?

I don't own one, I've always gone for my Louisville Slugger or the butcher knife when freaks are around at night.

I am going to buy one sometime soon though, when I can afford it and find out more about what I will want.

What makes you want to own one? Ie. how to the benefits outweigh the risks?

And where do you live that there is an 'always' involved here. . .? omg

considering the state of the world these days, every american should have at least one member of the family educated on the proper use of a firearm because when the war comes to america's front door.

I want to own one for safety. I am not exactly in Compton or Watts smile, but I live in a run-down area in Sacramento where there are helicopters with search lights, sirens, and drug deals going down all around me on a daily basis. This is not an overstatement. I felt safe enough until the multiple burgularies started occuring in our apartment complex. Also, on the news there are nightly stories of murders and all types of assaults surrounding my area.

I am somewhat able to protect myself, I have mace, but sometimes that is not enough. I cannot imagine having to shoot anyone and hate to think of harming anyone, but if I wasn't willing to do it, it would be stupid for me to consider purchasing a weapon. I would take all classes available and be completely responsible. There are never children in my apartment, but if there was going to be, I would store the gun and its ammo hidden and in seperate parts of the house.

I see. Yeah, I think it's possible for people to be responsible gun owners.

I worry about households with kids. If the unloaded gun and ammo are stored away from each other, the gun isn't that great for self-defense--better to call 911 and let the cops deal with it than to take the time to unlock and load your gun, probably. But if there are no kids in the house and it makes you feel safer, that might be good.

Of course, most people would also feel safer if they stopped watching the news! wink

Why would i own a gun?

So one of my kids can find it and kill someone accidently, or him or herself?

No need and no desire... also, I don't want my son to get it and accidentally shoot himself to death.

That is my theory.

It's a sound theory and one I suscribe to.

Yeah, there are too many children and teens that would still be alive because of irresponsible adults. It's sick.

Since there are *never* children in the house, then those would be the only times I'd seperate... otherwise it would be loaded with the safety on.
If and when I start having them in the house more often, I pray I will live in a safer neighborhood at that time so I can dispose of the weapon altogether. I would feel uneasy about the situation... there has been so many break-ins and assaults around here lately. It really scares me. It's the worst when I'm working my night job and I get home around 2:30 AM. I get out of my car and if my roommate has the parking spot for the night, then I end up parking far from our apartment. There are times when there will be a strange man by the dumpsters, watching me as I go into the apartment, or two guys walking after me in the same direction, etc. I don't want to be one of those women who says 'it will never happen to me".

And yes, the news sucks and I hate it. Especially now. sad

EDIT:
I absolutely agree with any parent who will not have a gun in the house. if I have children, it will be no question.

Unfortunately, it's not an uncommon occurrence. Sometimes the kid shoots him/herself, a family member, or someone at school.

I think the only people who should be able to have guns are the military and the police, if that was the case my grandfather would still be alive.

crazyhorse

I own a few that I bought while in the service. There locked down in a gun safe and only I know the combo. Two of them are collectors items,so I dont even have any ammo for them. The other I bring with me when I go on backpacking trips.Going into the wilderness for two weeks at a time without a firearm is not a smart thing to do.
