I'm going to make time to watch that this weekend myself. I've never really had any traditional holiday movies, but I could see In Bruge becoming that for me because it's so purely enjoyable.
.
I don't have a movie to rate (not only have I been working non-stop for the last two weeks, I'm still in the office this morning!), but merry christmas to you, Sexton & everyone else. |

Thank you! I hope you still managed to have a happy holiday yourself. Working on Christmas morning, ugh.

^First of all XxAxX, I'm going to watch "Skyfall" on your recommendation. I sincerely hope it's good!
Last night I watched "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". This movie came out in 1982 and is highly thought-of as a benchmark film. In fact, it's generally thought of as a comedy but you know what?
It's really a downer of a movie. With the exception of Sean Penn's Spicoli, pretty much every character gets pooped on.
But the Spicoli scenes are awesome, totally awesome! The Spicoli scenes ARE the movie, IMO.
There are some interesting facts about this movie. I caught that Nicolas Cage was "Nicolas Coppola" in the credits, and I knew this was Forrest Whittaker's first movie. But I did NOT know that Bruce Springsteen's sister was one of the cheerleaders! Read more here:

In 1982 I would have given "Fast Times" 5 stars, so let's leave it at that. |

Lucy
dreadful, dreadful piece of garbage
right from the opening scene where the guy kept roughly pulling scarlett back by the arm when she tried to walk away ... (her reaction was ridiculous)
just a typical hollywood lifeless effort
scarlett's acting was awful
due to the subject matter, i couldn't help compare this movie to limitless.. which although it'self a flawed film (the guy could have easily paid the russian guy back on time, and didn't really need to borrow the money in the first place ... a lazy effort to bring drama into the movie that brought it down several pegs) absolutely destroyed lucy
1/5

The movie was funny for it's time, but I haven't watched it in years. |

Yes, I knew Cage was a Coppola. But I'd forgotten - or didn't realize - that he was in "Fast Times". And you're right - it was funny for its time.

the Babadook - Closer to We Need to Talk About Kevin than the more traditional horror movie I somewhat expected. A believable, sympathetic mother, an all-too-realistic annoying kid, and some truly creepy moments add up to a very effective film with a surprising emotional bite. 4/5.

"The Babadook."
3 outta 5. I appreciate the concept, the pop-up book, and the acting. Overall, though, it was more 'meh' than I thought it'd be. "She made me glad to be a man" |

I visited Bruges around Christmastime a few years back because of the movie. Belgian beer on tap is the best beer I've ever had.

2.5 stars out 5. Meryl's performance is awesome and her singing for the first time doesn't annoy me. This is a movie not a direct version of the musical on film. The first half runs smooth including the Princes song "Agony" in which each prince tries to out Prince each other. The second half loses a lot of it's devestation that the stage version had. Making the losses not severe and in some cases not at all. The high points are the brilliant performances of Meryl Streep and Anna Kendrick, low points is the plot roll out in the second half (including the omission of the Prince's 2nd agony song.) and Johnny Depps just okay performance.

Dawn Of The Planet of the Apes (2014)
Andy Serkis is a genius at brining life to CGI. The ape storyline was compelling, the movie overall was pretty good.

I believe that Pamela Springsteen was going out with Penn at the time. And doesn't Judge Reinhold sport a Bruce tee in one of the scenes?

Not sure about the t-shirt. He had a "Springsteen - The River" bumper sticker on The Cruising Missile, though!
EDIT: Yo're right! He's wearing a Springsteen t-shirt when he's working at the convenience store, at the end of the movie. Nice catch!

These are the films that impressed me the most this year, which is awfully the worst year in film this current decade:
Only Lovers Left Alive The Grand Budapest Hotel Ida Boyhood Gone Girl Under The Skin Winter Sleep Maps to the Stars Foxcatcher Two Days, One Night
I still have to see Birdman, Whiplash and Inherent Vice. I also haven't seen Interstellar yet. I'll have to wait for the Blu-Ray release :/. |

I thought they were all fine movies. Except for maybe Two Days, One Night that is rather casual than intresting or groundbreaking as the other movies, but I felt that Marion gave a stellar performance, and the imagery of the film was really outstanding. Foxcatcher, on the other hand, being another biopic like Moneyball had a strange feeling to it, whether it's Steve Carrell's surprising performance or the story, I found that it showed many particular insights about America. Other movies were REALLY outstanding and would stand the test of time, including Maps to the Stars which I think was very underrated somehow, but it was on point, Julianne was neat, I think it's one of Cronenberg's finest. |

Top Five by Chris Rock. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Overall smart & funny film, though Gabrielle Union's character wasn't given much depth until her last scene. Hey... |
