Whiplash (2014) - A promising young drummer enrolls at a cutthroat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Very intense movie and performances by Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. I may get the big band jazz soundtrack. star star star star 1/2

The Ice Storm (1997) - 1973, suburban Connecticut: middle class families experimenting with casual sex, drink, etc., find their lives out of control.

A wonderfully downbeat Thanksgiving holiday film with an all-star cast. My kind of movie. star star star star star

Stranger by the Lake - 4.5/5 Very (very) sexually explicit thriller. The risk taking behavior of the main character is a real puzzle, but in an way that I found interesting instead of frustrating.

Umberto D. [Vittorio De Sica: 1952]

A long, troubled, mostly solitary march through post-war Italy taken by a kind and elderly gentleman with his dog, his debts, and his modest pension in search of worthiness in a world that has a bus to catch.

Tripping upon subletting dalliances and missing walls in his still rented room lower the dignity down to the creeping floor dust. It's only Umberto's grandfatherly-like relationship with his landlord's maid, an alarmingly charming young girl who -- somewhat oblivious to it all or not -- offers some sense of place even as she is so obviously lost about her own tragic way.

The final contemplations, wriggles, and ambiguous, point-of-view wags panhandling for the next pinecone might embed themselves in you forever.

How to Train Your Dragon 2.

I liked it. I don't usually like cartoons. My son just turned three and it didn't keep his interest as much as I thought it would. He's figuring out good v. bad and it's hard to explain.

Adieu au langage / Goodbye to Language 3D
(2014) - Famed director Jean-Luc Godard shreds conventional 3D filmmaking.

This is a movie I would not recommend to anyone. lol Only if you are a big fan of Jean-Luc Godard or like seeing beautiful but incomprehensible images along the lines of Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint 9 (both of which apply to me) then you will see the appeal in this. The 3D effects are freakishly stunning, but if there is a plot underneath the surface theme of deconstructing conventional film storytelling, it's beyond me even after two viewings. However, the masochist in me will still rate this one highly. star star star star

I'm watching it for the first time right now.

shrug I guess it's dated. I mean, it's one of those movies that's become a part of our culture.
But I don't really get it.

Nightcrawler
(2014) - When Lou Bloom, a driven man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story. Aiding him in his effort is Nina, a TV-news veteran.

This reminded me of Drive in that they are both well-done, creepy thrillers. star star star star

8.5/10 Very good. Acting was great especially, especially Jessica Chastain. This movie really got me.

8.5/10. My kind of movie... Rather slow story-telling but there's an underlying tension all the way through. It was good seeing James Gandolfini again. sad Tom Hardy is the absolute best. The best. I love women and Tom Hardy. Oh, and I LOVE this movie poster.

4/10. More or less okayish, I guess... There some appeal to it, but overall it really feels like style ove substance. And this 80s-everything-covered-in-blue-blowing-curtains-everywhere style really feels a bit ridiculous after a while. The rating might be a bit low....

I believe I gave it the same rating when I saw it, but I'd be willing to give the unreleased extended cut another chance.

Uma Thurman's character was the best thing in the movie.

Le roi et l'oiseau / The King and the Mockingbird (1980) - A chimney sweep and a shepherdess seek to escape from the clutches of a tyrannical king.

This French animated feature took decades to complete and was reportedly a big influence on Hayao Miyazaki. It's very clever and trippy so I can see why. star star star star 1/2

Nightcrawler 7.5 / 10

St.Vincent 9 / 10

Bill Murray is excellent in this.

Back in 1996 myself and 30 guys from work went to one of the better golf courses in Ireland (Mount Juliet) in Kilkenny and after we finished our rounds and were having our food and a few pints we noticed Bill Murray sitting up at the clubhouse bar having some food and a pint. We waited until he was finished eating and asked him if he would stand in for some photos.

One of the guys playing with us was also called Bill Murray and we have a great photo of the real Bill Murray presenting our Bill Murray with a trophy.

He was really cool and signed some stuff. We didn't annoy him too much and he told us that he had only learned his name in Irish the night before... Ulick M'gee

Fury (2014) - As the Allies make their final push in April, 1945, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and his five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines.

This was actually pretty good. Shot very well too. star star star 1/2
