My post wasn't meant to bash PCs or anyone who chooses to use them. There is just a big misconception about Macintosh computers because most of the world is in PC-ville. It's like saying BMWs suck because you own a Ford.

I don't own stock in Apple, but I do own three of their computers and couldn't be happier. smile

Good for you! With OS/X, the iPOD, and many of their media-centric pushes, they're headed in the right direction! smile

Just want to tell you that I've had this debate with Mac enthusiasts, PC stands for Personal Computer.

And a Mac/Macintosh is a computer, a PERSONAL computer as well.

I usually just refer to a PC as a Windows computer and a Mac as a Mac.

But BOTH are PC's.

Now as for what you want to do with a computer, all I can say and I've been using Macs for a while now more so than Windows machines, is that if you want to do work faster, easier, you should consider a Mac.

Do some research too. It will take you 5 steps to Save a file where the Mac it'll take you 2. These are random numbers of course so I can make a point, but really there are more steps and bullshit you have to go through in order to many tasks in MS Windows, any version.

Try it our for yourself. Mount a CD or Disk on a Windows machine...how do you find it? You have to navigate through all these windows and directories before it shows up!

On a Mac, you just pop in your disk and it appears on the desktop. That's it. So this easiness is great to get ACTUAL WORK DONE.

The computing actually kind of diminishes. A Mac doesn't waste your time.

I've seen many a computer user get overly preocuppied with technical caca than getting work done. And yeah sometimes this could happen on the Mac but that's because the person is actually putting too much enthusiasm into the Mac and usually those are Mac Heads.

Just play with both. Do the things you normally with do when you test out both platforms. Write a letter, burn a DVD or CD, listen to your jams, browse the internet, email. It's all easier and smoother on a Mac.

But the descision is ultimatly yours. Just get your work done.

If that requires just a typewriter to do then that's what you should get.

Also, who cares if 30,000 programs are available for Windows, if the five you want most are available only on the Mac? Is a person really going to use 30,000 apps?

And there really isn't a problem transferring files between Windows and Mac OS based pc's.

Mac OS X (10) is Unix based so you can open most files on it if you have the right app.

Read up on why the Mac may be better here:
http://www.apple.com/switch/whyswitch/

Oh and consider a Laptop/PowerBook/iBook. I've started using one and it's the greatest convinience, sitting on your couch writing emails, lying in bed listening to your jams, taking it to the library, to an Internet Cafe, to a friends house to share stuff, fantastic!

Oh and one more thing, Mac OS X does not freeze or crash!

What's the difference between a mac and a regular PC, I told my friend I wanted to get a new computer and he said I should get a mac, so I said well ain't a mac the same as a PC? Then we argued all night about the differences, so now I'm wondering what's the difference and why is a mac so more precise then a PC and what's more of a better product?

Windows XP is incredibly stable, and theres a ton of software, support, and accessories for it.

Mac's are a niche market. They look pretty, and cost alot, Theres like 1/10th of the selection of stuff available for them at your local electronics store. Macs have plenty of problems of their own, they just dont get publicized as much.

I've spent several years in school working on Macs, then I would go home to my Windows machine. They really are not that great.

The people that buy macs really get on my nerves because they become volunteer pseudo-mac-sales-people. Its almost like they arent completely content with their purchase unless they get others to do the same thing. Don't get sucked into the cult following of Macs because its misleading. Look at the functionality, software, and support available.

I cant speak too highly of the quality of Dells parts, but like others said here, they have PHENOMENAL support. I bought my computer in 2000 from dell, and it came with 3 years support. When something breaks, they have a replacement part at your door in like 2 days.

Sorry Tom, but you're mistaken. People like me speak highly of their Macs and recommend them to others because we love our computers...they are a part of our life and not just a box on a desk somewhere. And when someone asks about our opinion, such as the person who started this thread, well, yes, we recommend people buy a Mac instead of a Windows-based PC.

What exactly is misleading about the "cult following" of Macs? Having people say that they love their computers and would recommend the brand to others asking for assistance is hardly what I'd call misleading.

I work on a Mac, I play on a Mac, and I have been doing so for 13 years. I play IT support for a small office of 15 employees. Half have Macs. Half have PCs. I spend 95% of my time working with the PC folks. And I'm not trying to mislead you.

If you want a PC, good for you. If you want a Mac, good for you. If you ask me for my opinion, I'll gladly share it!

My cousin has a Dell also and she got the same 3 yr warranty, that's why I consider dell, there's so many computer I like though, gateway is good too, gateway was the first computer I ever really worked on, the only reason why I bought this dumb compaq was becaues it was cheap, I didn't have to buy it all serperatly and it all came in the same box, but now It's like I don't mind paying alot of money on computer, cuz with all the sh*t you gotta go through just to have a functional computer, you'll end up paying the high cost of a high n demand PC, so this time I won't mind paying extra cash if it works, like flyingcloud said my computer has become a part of my life and not just another box on top of a desk smile

What problems? I haven't had a virus in 5 years! That's right. And the worm I had last time didn't do anything!

Cost alot, then buy one used. I did, a used PowerBook G4. Have NOT had any problems in 2 years! 2 years! I paid way less because it was used. That's the way for me.

Look pretty, yeah, design matters. It should look good were you have it. Beige, I think not.

1/10th the selection because the store is mostly for Windows users. But go to a Mac only store and you'll see ton of stuff. Plus most things like USB devices are compatible with Mac equipment. Look at the boxes. Most peripherals are not platform independent. Software is a different story but software sections in "Com-PUSA" are ( I know, CompUSA...) are small.

I've spent several years in school working on Macs, then I would go home to my Windows machine. They really are not that great.

How so?

I've been completely content since 1997. And hey, go buy whatever the heck you want! I could give a rats ass, BUT I think you should make an informed descision, based on YOUR needs and informed descision making. Why follow the crowd. Sheep! sheep

I'm in no cult. I just use the easiest, fastest tool, best axe, whatever you want to call it. You want to go Windows go right ahead.

Me, I'll use this tool. It's cooler for me. It get's the job done. And if let's say I work with a designer and he/she uses a Windows machine, I don't care! Just as long as you do the work fast and great.

ooo

shrug I figure "PC" is simpler than "IBM compatible," the term we used back in the 1980s. In fact, I think we call Windows machines "PC's" because they evolved from the original "IBM Personal Computer" (anyone else remember using one?).
