Calling all Computer Geeks

What's the difference between a mac and a regular PC, I told my friend I wanted to get a new computer and he said I should get a mac, so I said well ain't a mac the same as a PC? Then we argued all night about the differences, so now I'm wondering what's the difference and why is a mac so more precise then a PC and what's more of a better product?

You might want to add what you use your computer for, that will help out a great deal.

In order to answer her question directly, regarding HER getting an appropriate type of computer... it's important to know what she uses it for, that pretty much determines which type she should get.

Many will diss Dell... but if you have a limited understanding of computers, and all you plan to do is what you exlained in the quote... then a PC will work out just fine.

Make sure the one you purchase is upgradable, so you won't get stuck like you did with the Compaq. I know a few who purchased refurbished Dell's and have had no problems... HUGE savings, great customer service if you need it.

From the sounds of your usage, I'd say stay with the PC platform.

Macs are for artists and strange people, and they cost quite a bit more. If you're adventurous, you can do everything you specify on a mac, and probably easier than on a PC--but you'll have to learn new ways of existing with your computer, and you'll be somewhat marginalized in terms of what software you can buy.

I swear I bought so much stuff for this stupid compaq computer, it don't even look the same when I bought it, that was only last year... I wouldn't wish a compaq on my worst enemy. what makes it so bad is they only give you a 45 day warranty, that really sucks mad

Just a word of warning if you DO decide to get a Mac...a lot of commercial software won't work with it...ya gotta be careful to check that the software ya want is Mac compatable. This is especialy true with games.

Uh, that is really only true of games. "A lot of commercial software won't work with it" is not a true statement. See http://www.apple.com/swit...index.html for a comparison of PC/Mac versions of popular commercial software.

And visit http://www.apple.com/switch for factual information about making the switch from a PC to a Mac, and read about the main reasons you might consider purchasing a Mac.

Macs do cost more than PCs. And you can expect to get what you pay for. If one's main complaint about their PC is a lack of quality, you'll find it's worth a couple hundred bucks more to get a Mac.

Don't get wrong...I want Apple to succeed very badly; I own stock in Apple, I believe in Steve Jobs this much. But...we're talking about a purchase TODAY--I'm still a PC user.
