Under California law, punitive damages are supposed to factor in the reprehensibility of the crime but also should bear some resemblance to the defendant's worth.
Thus, there is the question of whether Mr. Simpson, whose once-great wealth of $10 million or so has been sharply whittled by his many legal fees, is worth anywhere close to $33.5 million.
For those of you blaming Graycap for bringing up "race", CNN has an extensive story on the front page of their website about how the cultural, geographical and RACIAL components all play a factor into it. There is also apparently a related story about the concept of spanking in Sweden. So, how many of you are going to complain that now is not the time to bring up Sweden because we're talking about an American (Adrian Peterson, to clarify for those who forget he's American as well)
Which story is that? Can you link it? The only thing I found was an opinion piece that blamed Peterson's action not on his race, but on the fact that he's a Christian:
http://religion.blogs.cnn...?hpt=hp_c2
(CNN) – There’s one detail about the Adrian Peterson child abuse charges that no one seems to be noting: his alleged crimes didn’t happen simply under the guise of “parenting” but rather “Christian parenting.”
But the NFL star's Christianity shouldn’t be missed or undervalued in the sharp debate about his actions. Those of us who grew up in conservative Christian churches know all too well the culture that shapes the parenting beliefs of people like Peterson.
Today, the most notable proponents of spanking are American evangelicals. They not only preach the gospel of corporal punishment, they also impart messages that lay the foundations for abuses against children and the protection of such abuse by our legal system.

Why would CNN bring race into this?
I think it's because of the discussion about cultural difference but they interviewed whites from the South who said they grew up with the same kind of discipline method/whoopings that Peterson apparently did.
Oh, so it's NOT a racial issue. It crosses all racial lines.

Wait now, which is it.................one-third........or.............10 times as much?
In California before Oj, the award was up to 1/3 your NET worth.
Oj's net worth was down to $3million yet the award was 10 times that much.
Does thei make any rational sense to u?
But wasn't the award based on "future" earnings also because actually OJ's attorneys were saying his was hundreds of thousands plus the multi-million dollar compensatory award in dept, and whatever assets he had were already liquidated to cover his legal fees for the criminal case? So yeah, it does make rational sense to me. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart. |

Well, I knew you wouldn't supply a source so I found the article you are quoting from.
It's a New York Times article from February 11, 1997 regarding the jury award. NOWHERE IN IT does it substantiate your claim(s) regarding punitive damages. In fact, it clearly says:
Mr. Simpson, whose appeals will face both legal and financial hurdles, was not in court to hear today's verdict, which was permissible because the case was a civil action. And neither he nor his lawyers made a statement afterward.

I made that comment because everytime a brother is involved in something, the rules of the game change.
Obama, Oj, Vick, Tyson, The Criminal Justice System, Corporate America, .....
Why should Peterson be suspended? He hasn't been convicted of anything. He is guilty until proven innocent.
first, vick Tyson Rice Peterson all put themselves in the crosshairs. Second unless you can provide similar situations where fairer skin people did similar things with little or no consequences then you have no valid argument. Injecting race into a topic that is not about race doesn't help anyone's cause.
Ok. What President has been disrespected like Obama? Who do u know that went 2 prison for dogfighting? Who do u know, that was found innocent of Murder, yet somehow was sued in Civil court for 10 times his net worth? Simply look at the incarceration rates.....I don't need 2 make a comment there. I could go on.....but it's all good. Keep your clueless blinders on. I said zero about Obama in my response to you so I have no idea why you brought him up. I am sure a simple google search would bring up people who have been cleared of murder yet sued in a wrongful death civil case. Introducing more things in your response to me that were not initially addressed just makes your case look weaker. As far as being clueless, if that means I don't blame every thing that happens to me or people of my race on the color of my skin, I'll stay clueless. |

Well, they should. My siblings and I have gotten whippings, but never, has it been this excessive, and we were older. The other alternative for our punishment was not going out to play. We knew why we're being punished. This here is abuse. |

This guy is clearly talented enough to play in the NFL but has been out of a job for almost a year. He's never been charged with a crime, or even sued. His suspension was lifted in February, but no one will hire him. But I don't hear Graycap taking up his case, for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on...........

No, this all started with your "fake concern" comment. Then your comments about specific cases that now you know are really no different than some other cases out there...if you actually took a moment or two to do a little research.
Is there an overall issue with more severe punishment for black Americans? Yes, but your attempt to use specific high profile cases to make your point failed.
You'll never admit that, but again...you have tunnel vision and really are a lost cause and at the end of the day all you really are is an Internet finger wagger which means nothing.

You're going to see cases like this coming from different angles and viewpoints, and that is what makes it controversial. I think that it's important that we don't draw conclusions that every single thing that happens in America is race based, unless you can really prove it. You may suspect certain things, but it requires investigation. The militarization of the police, that's a fact before it's right before our eyes. |

It's like the boy that cried "Wolf!" Graycap cries "Racism!" so many times that when/if he ever does provide an actual case of racism, it's likely he won't be taken very seriously by anyone.

You know good and well that no one in here is trying to "snuff out discussions about race", that's what P&R is for. I will happily join you and Graycap over there to discuss any racial aspects you see fit about it but this particular discussion had nothing to do with race until Graycap brought it up and regardless to what he wants to believe, the concern we're discussing about Adrian Peterson beating his four year old son to a whelped up bloody mess has nothing to do with his race. It is NOT RIGHT to do that to a child, PERIOD! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart. |
