Joan Rivers hospitalized after she stops breathing during operation

The comedian was undergoing an operation for her vocal cords when the incident occurred. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center. An assistant to the renowned comic was overheard saying that Rivers was inside the hospital, and that the was ‘not conscious, but she’s stable.’

Tart-tongued comedian Joan Rivers was rushed to a Manhattan hospital Thursday morning after she stopped breathing during an operation, a family source told the Daily News.

“We are scared,” the source said. “This is not looking good. No big medical decisions will be made until (daughter) Melissa arrives.”

An assistant to the renowned comic was overheard saying that Rivers was inside Mount Sinai Medical Center after arriving a short time earlier.

“She’s not conscious, but she’s stable,” said an obviously distraught Graham Reed, the comedian’s assistant. Reed refused to provide any details when approached by a reporter.

But the family source said friends were gathering Thursday inside Rivers’ apartment.

“She would want us all to laugh,” the source said. “But at the moment, we are all praying.”

Emergency medical help was dispatched to 201 E. 93rd St. at 9:40 a.m., with the patient in “cardiac and respiratory arrest” at the scene, the FDNY reported.

The Brooklyn-born Rivers was reportedly undergoing surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic when the problem occurred, and she was quickly rushed to Mount Sinai, according to TMZ.com.

Rivers, 81, is a longtime Manhattan resident. She appeared in good shape Wednesday night for a performance at the Laurie Beechman Theater on W. 42nd St.

Oh wow my thoughts and prayers are for her. She's a tough lady so I hope everything turns out ok. My mom who's a little younger than Joan Rivers has been going in and out of the hospital this past 2 months so I know how stressful time this can be.

Hope she recovers. Loved her since my teens. I got to see her film her TV show in the 90's in NY, which was cool to see.

Of course it's sad when anyone dies, but death doesn't cancel out all the horrible things a human being does during their lifetime.

Of course people will now throw around words like "legend" and other OTT superlatives to describe her, but in reality her brand of comedy was all about taking cheap pot-shots at easy targets. Not exactly something to be revered in my opinion.

Still, sad news.

She only paved the way for women in comedy. By the way, are you taking kind of a cheap pot-shot right now in here? Hmmmmm.....
