Maybe we should have chosen Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism.

teller: the books that I suggested on that other thread were those that I had on my bookshelves within arms reach that I haven't read and that were relatively short (especially the latter). Since I didn't get much feedback ( ), I went ahead and chose the Coetzee book because from what I know of it, it deals with many of the issues that are frequently discussed here: race, empire, power etc. I thought it would be interesting for that reason. I've also heard Coetzee speak a number of times and I've been curious to actually read him. I haven't started the book yet, but I hope that people find it worth their time and are willing to plow through it and contribute even if they aren't thrilled with the choice. This is really a test run and I hope that in the future we will be able to choose books that are of a greater appeal and yet have an engaging subject matter. Some of those other suggestions seemed really interesting. Hell, I'd even be willing to read Ayn Rand! It is a good choice! I will read it as soon as the side street crack whore with photocopier runs me off a copy. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Yup, and I've ordered from the Japanese Amazon no problem The problem is that they won't export videogames (and probably DVDs also) because of the region-locking and all that bullshit.

Damn it, my copy still hasn't been delivered. And I don't
live near any crack-whore infested side streets either. Meanwhile I started in "A Son Of The Circus" which I got as a present for christmas. I don't think I'm gonna like it but I'll give it a try. The backflap said something about a midget with a dildo so I kind of decided I was going to approach this book with extreme caution. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
