Who has Diabetes here? My mom almost died from it a few days ago. She's in the hospital and doctors are readjusting her insulin and her eating patterns now. Just curious how other people here are dealing with it.

Had it for five years now. Controlled with medication and thank goodness not insulin. I don't eat as well as I should but when I got diagnosed, I gave up sweets cold turkey. I check my blood sugar 3x a day and have regular doctor visits. It's harder to control my sugar because now I am being treated with steroids for another autoimmune problem and it spikes my blood sugar.
I wish the best for your mom.

That is so scary. I'm glad she's getting stabilized now. If you will, so will I

From one Steeler fan to another I hope your mom gets better. Diabetes runs in my family. It's something I hope I won't get. My dad died as a result of it along with high blood pressure when I was 8. He was only 35. I would often wondered if i would make it past 35. Thank the good lord I'm still here. It's not always easy trying to manage your diet even as foods like pasta, rice , and grits can be unhealthy. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

The tragedy is that the dietary advice traditionally given to patients with diabetes will in fact make things worse. Read this http://www.diabetes.co.uk...52031.html I'm the mistake you wanna make

Over here I've heard from family members they are still recommending 100g (!!) carbs PER MEAL or something insane like that. I don't even eat half that amount in a whole day. My first doctor told me to eliminate potatoes, carrots, corn, fruit juice. The cardiologist told me to eliminate pasta, bread and potatoes.

I do. I've had Type II for about five years. Mine is genetic. I'm not overweight; in fact, I'm in incredible shape. Batman-worthy shape! But still, I have to take two insulin shots a day to stay alive. Exercise and weight have no affect on me. At least, I can't make it better with diet and exercise (although I'm sure I'd make it worse if I quit exercising and got fat).

BTW, when I first got off Januvia and Actos and switched to insulin, I too almost died. The initial dosage of insulin was WAY too high, and my blood sugar would go down to about 30. I felt like I was about to go into a coma, which I probably was. I'd have to eat a LOT of candy/sugar immediately, or I was a goner.

I'm not sure really whats wrong with my mom. She takes Lantus and Novolog. They are talking about getting her off of the Lantus. She might have to stay in the hospital longer because they too are having a hard time controlling her blood sugar levels.

I hope they can get her blood sugar under control. I know that it's scary if your blood sugar gets too low.

I have the opposite problem - I have reactive hypoglycemia. I have to be pretty careful with my food, making sure I don't go too long between meals or snacks, and that I eat enough protein and fat.
Simple sugars, caffeine and alcohol all wreak havoc with my blood sugar. Wanna see me flip out? Make me drink a Jack Daniels and Coke on an empty stomach. The fireworks will begin in less than an hour.
I've had this since I was a kid. When I go to visit my parents, my mom laughs at the fact that I can't go from breakfast to dinner without eating (like she and my dad do) and says, "Geez...having you here is like having a toddler again!"
