College grads: did you suffer from Senioritis?

For those of you who don't know, Senioritis is an acute condition suffered by college seniors who just don't give a fuck anymore. You can't concentrate, you stop caring about your grades, and your notebooks contain more pages of graduation party plans than actual class notes. You attend class as little as possible, skipping for such important activities as taking photos of the quad and checking the alumni site to see if you'll get to keep your email address. You spend all night on the org when you SHOULD be writing a paper. . .

Ahem. Anyway. Did you experience this? How did you get through it?

Oh gawd. omg

Don't say that. I'm 5 credits from graduating. I MUST GRADUATE. My husband and parents might actually commit homicide if I don't graduate. Oh gawd.

Well. At least I feel consoled that I'm not the only one who would JUST ABOUT RATHER DIE than go through any more school. Pfft.

5 credits? Finish the job I guess...

I had about 30 hours to go before I got a job offer that seemed irresistable. The job didn't work out, but I can't say I regret dropping out, either...intellectually, I get on just fine. But my heart was never in it--I changed majors and schools so many times I lost count. In retrospect, if I could have just gone straight Computer Science from the beginning, I'd be glad about having a degree today. But at 18 there was no chance of my having that much focus.

If you've got an apparently great job offer and your heart isn't in it anyway, I don't see why anybody would stay. And yeah, you're clearly not suffering too much on the intellectual front. Formal education isn't that special, really. It's not as though my philosophy degree is going to get me anywhere or anything.

I am, however, just being lazy. And I need to finish. And *whhiiinnneee*. . .

my last semester i suffered from senioritis, what totally blew was i had to write a 40 page paper topic was selected by the prof for my class in order to graduate...it was not pretty...but i made it through and graduated!! woohoo!! when it gets down to the last few days/hours prior to the assignment due date you end up not sleeping for days in a feeble effort to complete your assignments. i graduated in 2001 and am still recovering. good luck!

So Melissa, what kind of a job are you hoping for after its all over? What's next for you?

You've clearly got the nerd-brains for something interesting.

Yeah, I'm going to waste my nerd-brains doing animal advocacy. wink

But paying AR work is hard to come by, so I'll probably continue to work as a vet tech. Medicine is a love of mine. Maybe I'll go to vet school someday. But clearly, more school isn't in the cards for me right now.

What about you? What do you do with your nerd-brains?

Is AR advocacy the best use of your talents? You're a pretty articulate writer...perhaps you could weaponize a word-processor.

Me...I crank out software all day long, for salary, as a consultant, and for my own enterprise. That's where the money is.

I don't have a vent for my politcal activism, so it comes out here on the org...which is actually a fine platform, IMO. It's not a town hall...it something better than that actually...

Neither Gates nor Limbaugh ever graduated...

AR advocacy is the best use of my passion. But believe me, you're not the first or last person on my ever-growing list of people who think I'm wasting a perfectly good life. I'm pretty sure my entire family had big hopes for my prestigious and lucrative career. evillol

Really, though, don't you think the AR movement could use some smart and articulate people? I do.

So you're a TRUE nerd. That's cool. My brain doesn't work that way, but my husband is a computer guy. Y'all are a different breed!

You're right, the org is good for political expression. You get this odd cross section of society with every opinion under the sun. . .

And hey. You have finally said something to motivate me to graduate. I most certainly do not want to be Gates or Limbaugh. Thanks, man! biggrin

Speaking of, I am almost done, better go finish the damn paper. . .

My last day of class, I was running late as usual for my finals. I remember on the way there, my brain just snapped.

I just said to myself "If these dipshits are gonna flunk me because I'm 5 minutes late for a critique, then I am going to read them for filth".

I slowed down to the legal speed limit and walked in about 10 min late.

I must have had a major "dont fuck with me!" look on my face because my teacher didn't say a word about me not gettin there on time.

Then I passed with an A and got my diploma a couple weeks later wink

Yeay! Good for you. It's your education. Fucking profs tend to forget that. . .they are there to provide a service for you.

God, I can't wait for that moment. I'm going to really have to avoid screaming with joy at the top of my lungs when I turn in that last final next quarter. . .

I'm a little irritated, because my GPA is currently one one-hundredth of a point away from letting me graduate with honors. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to pull it up (because I have so frickin' many credits that it's hard to move my GPA anymore--I have exactly twice as many credits as I need for my departmental requirement). I'm pissed. But only a little. Mostly, I don't care anymore.

I don't think I suffered from too much senioritis during my senior year of college. In fact, putting aside summer sessions, my best semester GPA was earned in my final semester.

However, I definitely had senioritis during my 3L (final) year of law school. How did I get through it? Basically, I had gotten to the point where I didn't need to put much effort into my studies to get decent grades, so I slacked off on things like studying and preparing for class. smile And for the most part, I focused my attention on my part-time work as a law clerk at the firm where I had already accepted an offer of post-graduation permanent employment as an associate attorney.
