*Comedian and actor Tracy Morgan – as of this posting – was still listed as in critical condition after being in a New Jersey turnpike accident that killed his longtime friend and writing partner James (Uncle Jimmy Mack) McNair, 63, of Peekskill, New York and injured two other people.
As we reported the incident happened early Saturday morning around 1am as Morgan and the others were returning to New York City after performing at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Delaware.
Also we reported that Wal-Mart driver Kevin Roper, 35, of Georgia, was charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto after he crashed into Morgan’s 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter limo-bus, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Police told ABC News that Roper was dozing moments before the chain-reaction collision.
As you can imagine, Morgan’s relatives were shocked and distressed that the usually boisterous actor, who was born in the Bronx and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, was lying unconscious in a New Jersey hospital.
“He’s not in good shape,” Morgan’s ex-wife, Sabina Morgan, told the NY Daily News.
“I’m traumatized,” she continued. “I’m so upset. I can’t believe it. It’s like I’m in a nightmare.”
Here’s what else the Daily News is reporting on the comedian and his family:
The mother of three of Morgan’s children said the comedian had a broken leg among other injuries — but doctors anticipated he would recover.
“I don’t know,” she said, dubious of the doctors’ reassurances. “We’re just still vigilant with prayer.”
She added that the couple’s three adult sons were deeply upset by the news of their critically injured father.
“They’re not holding up well at all,” she said.
Sabina Morgan said her old high school sweetheart would be devastated to know one of his closest friends, McNair, had died.
“He was one of the first comedians that took Tracy under his wing,” she said of the elder comedian. “They were very close.”
McNair’s sister, Valerie Daniel, told CNN that her brother, “spoke very highly of Tracy. They go way back.”
The mother of Morgan’s fiancée, Megan Wollover, said she was in anguish.
“I was devastated,” Christine Wollover told The News when she heard the report about her future son-in-law.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she continued.
“I was just hoping and praying that my daughter and the baby weren’t in the car.”
Wollover said her 27-year-old daughter, a model, and the couple’s 11-month-old baby, Maven Sonae, usually travel with the comedian on tours — but luckily, not this time.
“I’m relieved for her and my granddaughter,” she said. “But (Morgan) is the foundation. I love him dearly, and I just hope he gets through this.”
Meanwhile, in a statement, Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon expressed sorrow over the accident.
“This is a tragedy and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved,” Simon said. “The facts are continuing to unfold. If it’s determined that our truck caused the accident, Wal-Mart will take full responsibility.”
