Any Hardcore Gamers at the Org?

It's the only subject I rarely see discussed here. Still enjoying my PS3 & PS2 - currently I'm rocking Grand Theft Auto V...amazing game, but GTA San Andreas is my all-time favorite. I play a lot of Unreal Tournament 3 also.

I did not like GTA V.The 2nd San Andreas game to turn me off.

Modern Day Vice City would be nice.

NOWADAYS, the videogaming world is the ONLY audiovisual realm I'm still interested in; new music?????? hahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! dead dead last week I bought an album from 1971, nuff said; new movies? if you think about it, new good movies are basically new renditions of the same old same old (Batman, Bond, Tolkien, etc) or adaptations of classic literature or old novels (12 Years a Slave, for example) nuff said;

but the videogaming world is still fresh AND young, think about it, the '70s were the "genesis era" of videogames, the '80s the "stone age" (archaic and repetitive), the '90s the "ancient classic" era (dated but still playable/enjoyable as fuck), and the '00s-'10s something like a "golden age modern" era

videogaming is only 40 years old, if cinema started in 1900 (roughly), the best movies were made 40-70 years after that (Classic Hollywood and New Hollywood, from Bogart to Pacino), videogames are NOW taking off to bigger, incredibly better things= state-of-the-art graphics? check; professional voice acting? check; epic soundtracks worthy of Hollywood? check; ambitious scripts and character development? check; refined/bug-free gameplay? check; variety? check (some people say that nowadays there are only overblown first-person-shooters, but that's not true)

Golden Age indeed

I personally see current videogames as a worthy art form that will give me hundreds of hours of enjoyment and interest; if some people think videogames are brainless bip-bip-bip entertainment for teens, I say stop living in 1982 dude; oh, and you think games are a waste of time? sure, now go watch your fav tv series rolleyes or maybe go spend those hard-earned 8 bucks in an irrelevant movie starring Jennifer Lawrence rolleyes

that said, the GTA franchise sucks these days, the new games are like bad Tarantino movies

I just can't express with word how much I LOVE the Mass Effect franchise, I will never forget this wild mix of female empowerment, interracial alien sex, classic trilogy SW-like action and gorgeous graphics...

I'm a hardcore gaming nerd since the early 80ies. I started with a pong console and a Nintendo Game&Watch Donkey Kong in 1981 or 1982. I played on various home computers, all Nintendo consoles, at the arcades, PC, PS 1 to 3, the Dreamcast, etc...

I don't invest that much time in actual gaming anymore, but still play from time to time and read all the gaming news every day. It's a wonderful hobby.

No, because you can fully see the character you play. It's a third person open world action game.

In first person shooters you only see your hand and weapon.

I am unfortunately soooo busy with work related stuff these days that I haven´t played a game in a long , long time but when I did play regularly, I really enjoyed GTA IV and its extension The Ballad of Gay Tony.....now that is a wonderful game. I did not like the Lost and the Damned that much but as part of the GTA IV franchise, I still enjoyed it more than most other games (the game itself is good but I simply didn´t like the biker gang scenario, the look and feel of it and the ugly looking safehouses).

GTA V is theoretically a great game as far as graphics and new cars and weapons go but I think the GTA IV universe had more likeable and more interesting characters. The idea of switching from Franklin to Trevor to Michael sounds good in theory and it is indeed an amazing idea but for some reason it left me a bit cold.

It was much better to really immerse yourself into Niko Belic´s world completely, or Luis Lopez´s world of nightlife and his circle of friends.

I also found GTA V´s storyline less interesting than the great plot of Niko Belic coming to America and living the American Dream or rather, American Nightmare, and I really liked Gay Tony and his lifestyle, and Luis Lopez being his bodyguard and protege and close friend.

-

.

Not that I dislike GTA V but Trevor was a bit too over the top for me, a bit too gross in a not so funny way and the missions were interesting but for some strange reason the simpler GTA IV games left a longer lasting impression on me. Probably because it had more interesting characters in it, and as a movie afficionado I prefer a good story over extravagant mansions and cars but I like both games.

Maybe I just need to play GTA V more often.

The graphics are much better than GTA IV but I prefer the warm look of GTA IV compared to the "colder" look of GTA V which reminds me a bit of Red Dead Redemption, another game I like but haven´t even finished yet. The aiming thingy in both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption is a bit similar, cleaner, more modern than in GTA IV but I found it much easier to aim and shoot in GTA IV.

Other games I really like and have spend a lot of time on are the HALO franchise even though it is rather simplistic and maybe a bit primitive compared to most other games but that´s part of the reason why I like it...you can just turn on your console and play a little bit, shoot a bunch of aliens here and there and see some amazing landscapes, and I am probably the only person on earth who really liked and still likes HALO ODST with that amazing soundtrack and nighttime feel .

-

.

I also love Half Life 2 and its extensions and can´t wait for part 3 to be released one day but I think they aren´t going to release that one, because it should´ve been released a long time ago.

-

There´s a bunch of games I started to play but due to having a very busy schedule I simply didn´t have the time and dedication to really get into them and explore them, easier due to the games having a long story or because the controls were so complicated and difficult to get into that I simply put them on the shelf to play at some later point when I´m less busy.

Still have to continue or finish the Batman games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City),

started playing Assassin´s Creed 3 (or was it 4) and realized I needed more time to really get into it, and started Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare but bought them when GTA V came out so playing GTA V had a higher priority. And then there´s a pile of games I bought and liked, but haven´t really gone back to since then for various reasons (like Crysis part II, Mirror´s Edge, and some other games).

.

Some games are immensely popular, like Fallout 3 but I disliked it so much that I went back to the store to get some other game instead so I got those Saints Row games but didn´t like them , couldn´t really get into them.

Hey Kool, good to see you back!

I liked GTA V, my only issue is the main storyline was too short, unlike previous GTAs. Now if you really want some fun, play the GTA IV, TLAD, TBoGT missions in chronological order. That's what I always do...there's a thread on how to do it at gtaforums.com

But PS2 GTA San Andreas is still the KING of GTA....the characters, storyline, music, map are top notch. Plus it had the wacky element that was missing in GTA IV & TLAD (although it returned in TBoGT).

Other games I'm rocking are NBA 2K11(the best of the series, IMO), Mortal Kombat IX and Unreal Tournament III (I downloaded a shitload of updated UT99 maps from UT3MOD.com).

I could never really get into San Andreas for the simple reason that I started with GTA IV first, and going back to glitchy graphics and that old way of aiming and shooting is something I couldn´t really figure out. I understand why most people prefer San Andreas over any other GTA to this day but I wish they´d release an updated version of San Andreas, and also of Vice City while they´re at it.

The thing is, I own those old GTA games and can play them on my Xbox 360 even though they´re made for the old Xbox but the controls are different, and the aiming and shooting is different, and there´s nothing I can do about it (it´s probably different on the PS2 though).

Once I have a bit more time on my hands I would like to spend some more time on San Andreas and Vice City because I never really finished those games due to the problems I mentioned above (different control settings, old school graphics, glitchy, etc.). But the fact that everybody still raves about them got me curious. Too bad that they aren´t releasing an updated, reworked version. I think they did rework Vice City for smarphones though.

-

.

Regarding the chronological order, I thought playing GTA IV first (Niko Belic), and THEN Lost and the Damned, and after that Ballad of Gay Tony was already the chronological order the way it´s meant to be, otherwise Rockstar wouldn´t have released them in that order, would they? Or what you exactly mean when you say chronological order? I did play them in that order, and it made perfect sense. Or are you talking about the missions themselves and not the main games? And how would I be able to switch from one game to another just to play some other mission in some other part of GTA IV?

Anyway, I will definitely check out those NBA games you mentioned. I´m not a big fan of sports games but I love basketball and think I should give those NBA games a try. Would probably inspire my own ball game skills in real life, too. lol

-

And don´t get me wrong, I love GTA V but GTA IV and its extensions were waaaaay more addictive and interesting as far as plot goes. GTA V is technically and gamewise much superior, and I love the music, but the plot was a bit too superficial, like you said above...it was way too short. When I was done playing it I had a big "WTF? " look on my face and said "This can´t be it."

And I hated the torture missions. And couldn´t find all those damn UFO parts. lol lol

Don't go to sleep on GTA III. To me, it's better than Vice City, and a notch below SA. Despite its limitations, the map is incredible. Great story, great characters, great radio stations - Lazlow on Chatterbox is fucking classic!

naw, Vice City is the best GTA game ever, in fact it's easily one of the top10 best games of all time

I guess I´ll have to get GTAIII then and give it a try. I´m very curious now.

And thanks for the missions list. Sounds complicated to switch from one disc to another but sounds fun as far as storyline goes. Guess I´ll try to play it like that real soon.

.

I don´t know much about GTAIII but I trust your judgment. I don´t understand why Rockstar doesn´t just re-release the old GTA games as updated versions. They surely would make a lot of money and the development phase would be very short and cost very little, since the main ideas are already developed and it would just be a remake.

It´s going to be difficult for me to really get into the old GTA games (SA and III) but you got me really curious now. wink

NOWADAYS, the videogaming world is the ONLY audiovisual realm I'm still interested in; new music?????? hahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! dead dead last week I bought an album from 1971, nuff said; new movies? if you think about it, new good movies are basically new renditions of the same old same old (Batman, Bond, Tolkien, etc) or adaptations of classic literature or old novels (12 Years a Slave, for example) nuff said;

but the videogaming world is still fresh AND young, think about it, the '70s were the "genesis era" of videogames, the '80s the "stone age" (archaic and repetitive), the '90s the "ancient classic" era (dated but still playable/enjoyable as fuck), and the '00s-'10s something like a "golden age modern" era

videogaming is only 40 years old, if cinema started in 1900 (roughly), the best movies were made 40-70 years after that (Classic Hollywood and New Hollywood, from Bogart to Pacino), videogames are NOW taking off to bigger, incredibly better things= state-of-the-art graphics? check; professional voice acting? check; epic soundtracks worthy of Hollywood? check; ambitious scripts and character development? check; refined/bug-free gameplay? check; variety? check (some people say that nowadays there are only overblown first-person-shooters, but that's not true)

Absolutely agree with you....videogames are so underrated and get a bad rap from people who don´t even have a clue. They give you so much more entertainment for your money and, especially in the case of GTA, give you a combination of listening to good music, a good plot, gaming action and a good laugh when the story includes funny scenes.

I see why you dislike the new GTA games but come on, they´re not THAT bad. lol

Have you played GTA V?

Interesting.

Why do you prefer it over the other games? I like it, too, but I´d like to read your opinion.

Like I said, a new and updated version of this would be great. I´d love to see Vice City with updated graphics because I love the atmosphere and Miami Vice feel and look of that game and the 1980s vibe.

Not a big fan of first person shooter games (I guess GTA maybe qualifies as that?),

No, because you can fully see the character you play. It's a third person open world action game.

In first person shooters you only see your hand and weapon.

ah, okay

I'm addicted to Zelda games and Kingdom Hearts, though I still haven't finished every game in those series so I'm not moving on to anything else yet.
