Stephen Colbert is taking over "The Late Show" when David Letterman retires

So says my TV. NBC is reporting that CBS has announced this. Didn't see it on CBS's site yet, though.

Confirmed:

CBS has named Stephen Colbert as new host of the "Late Show," effective when David Letterman retires.

Here is the press release:

The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning "The Colbert Report," will succeed David Letterman as the host of "The Late Show," effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast.

The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Letterman, the legendary, critically acclaimed host of the CBS late night series for 21 years, announced his retirement on his April 3 broadcast. Colbert's premiere date as host of "The Late Show" will be announced after Mr. Lettermen determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015.

Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted "Late Show" will be determined and announced at a later date.

I know it would have been very unlikely, but Ellen DeGeneres would have KILLED all others in ratings.

I don't know that I like Colbert that much. Interesting character actor, loved him in Strangers With Candy. But he's a bit of a caricature. I'll be impressed if he lasts past 3 years.

Honestly, I don't watch many talk shows like I used to. I'm down to watching (when I make an effort) Ellen, Daily Show, and Late Late with Craig Ferguson. Aside from the live performances, Leno and Letterman were pretty lame. Kimmel is funny, Arsenio has a better variety of guests, and Conan is great depending on the guest. They benefit from being "outside" the big 2 slots though.

I love The Colber Report so this saddens me. Doubt if I watch him doing a regular hosting gig. Maybe CC will grab back Oliver and give him the time slot.

That's what they said about his comedy central show WAAAAY back in 2005. Its been nominated for numerous emmeys over numerous years and won several, some as late as last year. Its not fading. The character many said couldn't last is fully established and is apparently getting room to grow.

True. However, the Colbert Report intros the popular Daily Show at a early evening timeslot. Much of his audience is due to that. Also, his show is rich with satire. If anything, a niche spin-off show like that is perfect for a cable channel.

This is a completely different format, and he would have to split those numbers against Fallon and Kimmel. In the age groups that most networks target, it's going to be a brawl between the three. And who is going to attract the 50 and over market?

So while it definitely can work, I don't see what he offers that Fallon, Kimmel provide, let alone Arsenio or Conan. And the Emmy nominations and wins... meh. A lot of that is friends scratching friends backs. I'd rather give credit that his viewership has been steady and strong. But will those numbers follow him to 11:30? And will the numbers Letterman had stick around?

Time will tell. And like I said, I'd be impressed, not shocked.

Colbert is a republican? I thought that was part of his schtick. I don't believe I ever heard him disclose if he has any party affiliation.

Anyhoo, Colbert already has an 11:30 following since that's when his show airs. The show seen in early evening is rebroacast from the night before.

I would have chosen Ellen but Stephen will be fine.

Well I as referring to the character...who is obviously republican....hell a power² republican.

I only suspect he is actually a democrat because of the posture of his satire and his guests...but i dont KNOW.

And thanks for clearing that timeslot thing up. I live in a central time zone for 4 years after of thirty in pacific... And I shouldn't...but I get fuckin confused with that time bullshit....especially with DVR, hulu, and Netflix...which need me to not know any times.
[Edited 4/10/14 16:20pm]

And if the format maintains any semblance to the current one...it brings a not so neutral stance on politics to a non-cable lineup that makes attempts to stay neutral to a small degree, With the subject of politics to the fore.

I was wondering if they would let him do the character during his monologue or if they'll just have him do a regular stand up routine?

Maybe they'll mix it up. He's going to have different writers so I'm curious how that will work out. Who is going to replace him on Comedy Central?

His Late Show contract is for five years. The only hazard I see is that he may discover that he doesn't like doing this type of show.

I figured they hired his act...not him. No one knows 'him'.

Jay Leno is a car addicted italian foodie. They didn't hire that...they hired his act.

But maybe he will just b normal. Who knows. I don't suspect that tho. They might ask him to tone it down a little. But they hired 'Stephen Colbert' and probably intend to take advantage of it.

It seems ur right. I didn't expect that.

I guess that opens it up a bit but sheds summin I thouroughly enjoy. I feel ya.

If someone can pull off a good show while being narrowly defined by a schtick...he might be more effective overall if he has more tools. I'm sad though... Sniff sniff...bye bye u crazy² republican.

I suppose he actually being himself...just constantly saying things contrary to his actual beliefs. Saterious maximus.

His babysitter, Jennifer Garner, said he was a very hard working, humble, generous, kind, and intelligent person.

Generous and humble aren't in 'colbert's' bombastic vocabulary. His intelligence is dubious; intelligent design, strict creationism, and denial of ANY human impact on the environment being strong tenents of his. Doesn't have to work hard "cuz apparently he's white according to others," and is unashamed about the entitlements that entails.
