The funny thing is - people don't remember that cartoons were really made for adults back in the 40's, and were shown in movie theatres before the feature presentation. A lot of them parodied the goings on at the time... hence, the "racist" ones...there was still segregation in the states... remember? They are a great reference to the times and should be viewed in that context. I remember the one where Bugs is mocking Adolf Hitler, I remember the one's with all the celebrities being parodied... Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (sp?) getting waited on by Elmer Fudd, and wanting "rabbit"... In that same cartoon, we saw the Marx Brothers, Jimmy Stewart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, etc... As of late, the only cartoons that "mock" modern times are the Animaniacs, a Speilberg production from Warner Bros. They include parodies of current celebrities, but stay somewhat away from politics, occasionally knocking a topic here and there. John K. was great as the creator and driving force behind Ren & Stimpy... when he was squeezed out of control by the "higher ups", the show sucked. Ichy & Scratchy are fantastic... as is their home on the Simpsons. I love that they continue to push the buttons of the executives... if Matt Groening ever leaves, it'll be the end of the show as we know it. I guess I'm trying to say that I whole heartidly agree with you, IceNine and others... the cartoons of today suck. I own a lot of the Warner Bros. cartoons and put them on sometimes when I wanna watch something really funny. My kids watch 'em too, and they love 'em. BTW - Where's Speedy Gonzales??? |

Do you remember how much you loved watching those dysfunctional fuckers try to murder each other every episode? That was real entertainment!!! They used some very creative approaches in their attempts to injure one another... Flash forward... some fucking idiots decided that Tom and Jerry should be friends and work together to overcome obstacles and provide a good example for children. Tom and Jerry immediately sucked... These same dickheads were probably responsible for that abomination called "Scrappy Doo" that all of us referred to as "Crappy Doo." One "r" in "Barbera" edit. ... [This message was edited Mon Mar 17 9:53:29 PST 2003 by IceNine] I grew up a pretty well-rounded person. I don't make racial slurs or degrade women, and try to treat people equally. And I also grew up watchin all these old cartoons before they were edited to be PC. I can understand the intent of sheilding kids from this material until they are old enough to really understand its context, but there are so many people in my generation who grew up fine watching them. I think these cartoons should remain preserved in their original format. We know they came from a different time period, and we can see how much our culture has changed and evolved from then.

We were only allowed to watch Looney Tunes, and the older cartoons in my house when I was little. My dad wouldn't let us change the channel on Saturday mornings. (an excuse for him to watch cartoons). I remember being aware of the fact that they were originally made for adults, and of course didn't get a lot of the jokes, mostly because of the fact that they dealt with popular culture in the forties. I still loved it though. As I got older, I would watch the same cartoons and I finally "got" a lot more of the jokes. It's the same now, I'm sure, with kids who watch the Simpsons. They like it, but as they get older, they'll realize that they didn't really understand a lot of the puns and jabs at American culture. The absence of Speedy Gonzales REALLY pisses me off! They claim that they don't run the cartoons anymore, because of the fact that all of Speedy's hispanic mice friends were lasy hispanic stereotypes. HELLO! SPEEDY WASN'T! He was the hero, not the other mice! Speedy rose above the stereotype.
I live in a town with a 75% hispanic population (San Antonio), and I've yet to talk to a single hispanic who is offended by Speedy. In fact, most of the Hispanics I've talked to say that they like the character, and view him as the first positive hispanic cartoon character. People have just gotten way to sensitive, and we're raising a nation of complete wusses as a result! I also remember ones with Bugs Bunny being chased by some native from the bush in Australia or something... the native was using some fake native language... that one never gets shown either. I totally remember that one! Bugs: "Unga...Bunga..Binga Bunga Bonga Bingo Bun-ga..." Aborigine: "Agghhh!!?!!"

I'm kinda middle of the road on this. I agree alot of the cartoon violence was hilarious. Still, I remember being a kid and how much of a buzzkill it was whenever some overtly racist joke would get dropped right into the middle of my cartoons. I knew that they were originally made for adults in a different time period and all that, but to an nine-year old it still sucked. Gotta say I don't really miss those cartoons.

Who remembers the T+J one with the piano? That's one of my faves...
Or any with T+J and the dog. Oh, and what about (heh, heh!!) that one where he ties Jerry to a train track and Jerry is praying really fast to live and then that bird drops a bowling bowl on the track and the train that Tom is on goes down the shitter?! And Toms face with jaggard teeth and his tongue hanging out to the side like a madcat while he's on the train... Fuck, I grew up listening to 'Ahhh!!!' whenever Jerry hurt Tom and that was always guarenteed to bring a laugh on. The space agey ones were a bit weird.
