Question 4 americans

Hi smile

In American movies when they speak on the phone they never say "bye" or "see ya", they just hang up. This is unthinkable of in France: u just HAVE to say sumthin like "bye" or it's really rude hangin' up on someone like that even if all that was to b said has been said.

So I was wondering, do y'all REALLY hang up like that in the US and everyone's cool wit it or do they just do it in the movies 2 save screen time?

A goodbye is standard in the States, too, unless someone is pissed off.

Mmmh... It's crazy... 2 me American cinema is the best in the world, it's crazy they'd go unrealistic like that just 4 a few seconds of screen time. It always makes French viewers wonder, don't y'all Americans react when u c this, as in "it's not realistic, people don't do that!"?1

Sometimes, I suppose. But it's the least of what most of us would notice. If the screenwriter has done his/her job, I'd imagine we're more engrossed in the conversation that preceded the goodbye.

Yes, although I prefer "smell ya later"

I think there something equivalent to goodbye, "alright then", "later" something that for us means the same thing or a que the conversations over.

when i was a kid, rarely did i have questions to ask.

when i called anyone i just started talkin, said what i called to say,

then ended the call.

most times i would end by sayin 'later' UNLESS i wanted them to

unnastand that they had no power, in which case i would just hang up. lol

I have to call the US at work often and I'm pretty sure I've always heard some sort of goodbye...but I'll tell you one thing that I've noticed when you talk to someone from the states, you ask them how they are and they only ever say "good" and NEVER ask how you are in return.

That's pretty much unheard of in Canada. It's always something along the lines of "I'm well, thanks...yourself?". To not ask in return is considered asshole-ish and kinda low class.

I'm sure this doesn't apply to all Americans, but I confess that after moving to Canada I noticed how much I did this -- and I was horrified. shake

I've never noticed it to tell you the truth, but it is standard telephone etiuette to say something to let the other person know you're finished talking. I never hang up the phone without saying goodbye unless I'm very, very pissed off. And most people would consider it rude to just hang up the phone without saying something. Most of the time I end my conversations with, "Have a good day" or Have a pleasant evening." if I'm talking to trades people or folk I don't know. Friends and family get, "Bye" or "See ya!"

Maybe I'm not that observant, but I've never notieced this. biggrin

I often leave my front door open, but I lock the storm door which is a glass door. I like a lot of light and the western sun shines on the front of my house, so in the afternoon and evening, I like that extra sunlight coming in the house.

True yes, It could also be different in the business world... Sometimes if a sales person or telemarketer cold calls me and says how are you, If im annoyed i will just say "Im fine thanks"...

Not saying your in sales, thats just an example

I think it depends on the situation. When I'm on the phone with one of my closest friends for the third time in five minutes because we're checking immediate progress on something constantly, I might simply hang up with the words "alright, cheers" or something. Needless to say, I'd never do that when I'm on the phone with my mum, for instance... (I'm from central Europe, though)

I don't know if it's excklusively American or not, but I've often witnessed "how are you?" being treated as the BE "how do you do?", which is rather a greeting than an actual question. "How do you do?" is used the first time you meet someone and is usually answered by "how do you do?". "How are you?" obviously usually means you want to casually check how someone's feeling, but I've witnessed many people simply answering it with another "how are you?", especially Americans.

No we don't...it's pretty much a movie and tv thing. Hanging up on a person without a goodbye is generally considered rude and would lead the person on the phone to think you were angry with them or something.

Well there's worse examples of unreality in movies.

My favorite pet peeve is when people are in some kind of life and death situation and they stop in the middle of their dilemma to smooch/screw.

That irks the crap out of me. lol
