The Color Purple is a great movie and it's like watching a book on film.

I haven't avoided it, certainly. I just never saw it when it was current and I was young, and somehow never got to it later in life. Something to look forward to, maybe

..LOL...Shame, shame, shame....The interesting thing about "The Color Purple" is that every time it comes on it's as if I'm seeing it for the first time. Steven Spielberg did a magnificent job and Quincy Jones should have gotten Oscars for Scoring the film. I think People forget that Whoopi can deliver a Powerful and Dramatic performance. She was so young then...

I'm not going to say "Iconic"...but being a big sci-fi geek, it's strange that I never saw;

"Star Trek - Nemesis"

or

"Star Trek - Insurrection"

Not good movies! I don't know how TNG failed so badly in the film dep't. Oh, yes, maybe it's partly because they let Jonathan Frakes direct a few of them. Those movies wouldn't even really make good episodes IMO

Haven't seen the movie, but I read the book - is that OK? smile
Btw, I am not black.
But I've read lots of books by African-American authors, all the classics (Frederick Douglas, b.t. Washington, Langston Hughes, Claude brown, Richard wright, August Wilson, Gwendolyn brooks, etc.).
It's not a must just for blacks, but any American.

An iconic movie I haven't seen but want/mean to, is The Taxi Driver - Siskel and Ebert talked about it with such passion when I saw them back in 2000, that I put it on my must see list, but haven't yet.

I didn't know there was any filching in that film, I'll have to watch again! ;-) I've never seen 8 Mile, but if it sends you to sleep then I'm out. I've only ever wanted to leave a movie theatre once and that was for Jackie Brown. Ugh.

I watched the Godfather about a decade ago and didn't see what all the rave was. A buddy of mine who i'd gotten a copy of the LIFE Magazine with Brando on the cover from an antique shop BEGGED me to watch it. I struggled through it and haven't even considered the sequels.

I'm not a fan of "gangster" movies in general. I hate the way we glorify those films and that life. So I've never seen

Goodfellas

Casino

Not to mention

Casablanca

Gone With The Wind

Citizen Kane

Schindler's List

Back to the Future

Indiana Jones

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Braveheart

Saturday Night Fever

Rocky

I think the fact that I never saw Friends or Seinfeld is a microcosm of so called "classic" films gone unseen by me.

One of my buddies, so aghast that I'd never seen the Star Wars movies DRUG me to the 'prequels' starting with Phantom Menace. Like i thought, i hadn't missed much

Apocalypse Now

All but the first of the Godfather movies

Raging Bull

Mean Streets

2001: A Space Odyssey

Dr Strangelove

Casablanca

On The Waterfront - and, in fact, any of those early Brando movies

The Three Colours trilogy

The vast majority of Woody Allen's films, except for Annie Hall, Manhattan, Mighty Aphrodite, and Play It Again, Sam
Just about everything from the 'golden age' of Hollywood.

I disagree bout Insurrection. It would have made an great episode, but the story wasn't really movie material. Insurrection just plain sucked.

I know like 15 years ago I saw the first 10 minutes of the Godfather (and it was really interesting). I stop watching it because it was on the USA network so I know they edit and the commercials would ruin it for me.

Probably about 25yrs ago for me...I certainly don't remember a thing and I always miss the Marathons on Cable. I"m sure Hollywood is planning a remake since they can't find unemployed & talented screenwriters that have an active imagination...They need to hire me, I have at least 20 Dramatic & Sci-Fi movies rolling around in my head....All I want is $25 Million upfront....

Hey, I kind of liked the concept of Nemesis, now whether it would have been a better episode than movie, I don't know, I just liked it best out of all the TNG movies. Seems like most sci-fi tv shows to movies don't do well in the transition.

First Contact was the best of the TNG movies, the rest were ok.
