Am I tripping or...? (company policy question) Hi,
So here's my Q?
Is it usual in a small company (less than 20 people management included) when someone is fired or resigns absolutely no information is given to other employees about it and rumors are allowed to run free when discussing it at a meeting could clear things out once and for all? Is it usual in a small company that CCTV is installed in some rooms, including audio recording, and that salarees are not informed of the cameras being installed or that audio is recorded as well, and learn it thru rumors only?
I have little experience in the usual functionment of regular companies that I wanna know if I'm tripping or if these things SHOULD be addressed at staff meetings?
Thanks for opinions/experiences. [Edited 1/30/14 5:48am] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I apologize for saying so but that's 2 dumb questions and one dumb statement in less than 5 minutes. U're GOOD! Dumb Q#1: Would I speak about Indian laws if I was working in Hungary?
Dumb Q #2: NO that's not how I interact at work because this is a leisure forum, not work. Do u interact on the Org as u do at work? Does anyone here? Dumb statement: NO they don't "don't speak to me". They don't speak to anyone, as written BLACK ON WHITE in my previous post. So please forgive the little sarcasm, it wasn't intended to be offensive, but seriously... Peace A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

OK, huh... this is becoming waaaaay to specific. I was asking in a general manner so I've edited the post in order to get back to my 2 questions which regard small companies policies in general and not the possible specifics of my personnal situation A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

It is normal not to discuss why someone is fired.

Really? OK but then isn't it at least announced that the company and that person "parted ways" even if the reasons are not disclosed? People usually just "disappear" like that??? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

There normally isn't a formal announcement unless they are upper management. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

In France it's not even permitted to film them at their work station whether they're informed or not. But in India everything is permitted as long as u have more money and/or power than the guy who disagrees A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

A business can install cameras if they want and are under no obligation to inform their employees. If an employee is fired the company does not have to inform their employees about the situation unless they choose to do that.

In France actually the laws r quite strict: u can install cameras on commion areas (lobbies, etc.) but u have to signal it, u can't film someone at their workstation, and in no circumstances can the sound be recorded. I think it oughta be like that everywhere. As for firing people and resignations I understand the confidntiality of the circumstances but I think nonetheless in small companies it would make sense to at least announce the event. Rumors are hardly ever in favor of the management anyway, so better not let them spread if u ask me ^^ A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I'm confused...is this a company in the USA or in India? By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

It's India. I'm still in shock that it's custom to have people "disappear" from work without a word but... OK then:-o Advertising the existence of cameras is a legal obligation in some countries and it should be the case everywhere if u ask me. Management are very friendly and familiar in their manners but outside of working hours they keep their distances with all of us, never accepting invitations or coming to parties, I think purposedly, to avoid conflicts of interest between friendship and work.

sorry i'm late! i wondered because your original post was really long and you mentioned india so i thought that probably the different culture would have a bearing on how management handled things, especially termination. for example, i just heard today that a former employer where i once worked has terminated someone's employment but no one knows why, exactly. and they never will find out because US employers do not reveal reasons for termination of an employee's employment, that's against the law here in the US.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh, OK. Culture isn't an issue here because it's a western management but IDK if there r indian laws regarding this. I hadn't thought of it b4 but disclosing reasons for termination could be pregudice for said employee's reputation so that law makes sense. ^ a lot of places monitor employees' use of internet at work, and also keystroke monitoring software is used in many places of work. e-mail is usually monitored too. i think a lot of employers in the US use software packages marketed to them specifically for this kind of thing.

When I have had to call a past employer and they were reluctant to speak about a former employee the question I always ask is "Would you hire this person back if there was an opening?" Its perfectly legal without getting into specifics.
