The Car Thread: What Kind of Car Do You Drive? Just wondering what type of car my fellow orgers drive? If you could post the make, model, color and year, that would be great.
I currently drive a 1992 gray Chevy Lumina that's on its last leg - lol!! I'm having problems with the automatic brake light coming on, the car conking out on me all of a sudden, as well as the brakes making a strange noise. It happened to me about six times today while I was driving home, luckily it wasn't that far of a drive to get there. I am going to have to get a new car, but I'm not sure which one. I am kind of leaning towards a Toyota, since people who own one rave about how dependable they are. I'm just wondering if you have/had a car that was really great and was dependable, and if so, what type of car was it? Since I have not made a final decision about which kind of car to get, word of mouth is sometimes the best way to find out which cars are the best. Feel free to post. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

My current cars:
2002 Mazda Miata LS (color: Crystal Blue Metallic) Miatas are well-known for being reliable, and it's a blast to drive. The Miata is the modern version of the classic roadster. However, if you need to transport large objects or more than one passenger, you won't want it for your primary car. Also, the performance tires that come with it just can't handle snow at all. 1987 BMW 325 (color: black) I've only had the BMW for a few months. While it does have a few quirks/problems (some of which I've repaired), that's to be expected from a 16-year-old car. On the whole, it's a well-engineered car that was built to last. It still feels very "solid," for lack of a better description, and it handles well for a sedan. Note that if you get a BMW, you'll probably want to have it serviced by an independent shop, unless you feel like paying the outrageous prices that you local BMW dealer probably charges. For example, I bought a new (aftermarket) shift boot for about $15, whereas the dealer wanted about $200 for the part. My wife owns a 1997 Oldsmobile Achieva. Stay away from this car. The handling is lousy, and it has a problem (which other Achieva owners have experienced) that the dealer cannot fix: if you try to move the car while the engine is cold, it'll stall and refuse to restart until you wait for a few minutes. I saw a bumper sticker today that said something like, "Americans drive American cars." Well, until Detroit makes something that's as good as the Miata or the Bimmer, this American is going to stick with imports. They generally are. My dad had a 1991 Toyota Corolla, which was the car that would not die. He's not very good about regular maintenance (e.g., oil changes), but it was still a very reliable car that survived three rear-end collisions and a front-end collision (the latter was when my mom encountered a patch of ice and hit a tree). The only reason that car still isn't running today is that my brother finally totalled it by driving it into a parked car at maybe 30-40 MPH. (He was unhurt, fortunately.) BTW, my parents just bought their fourth Toyota: a 2002 Camry. They're obviously satisfied customers. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I wish this city had a rail transit system. Well, the monorail is opening this year (I saw one of the trains doing a test run a few days ago), and one of the stations will be just up the canal from our place, but it's hardly extensive. There's talk of creating a light rail system (like Boston's Green Line), but I think it'll be years before they build it, if ever. Too much drag racing and I broke my truck
My brother-in-law killed a car (a 1983 Oldsmobile, I believe) about three weeks after he got it. We think he was drag racing it, but we don't have any proof. Sorry to hear about the truck... but now that you're a city girl, you don't want a truck, right? I had a 1991 Saturn SC that I would have sold to you for maybe $500, but I traded it in when I bought the Miata. I've only recently got around to learning how to drive. Never needed to before... come to think of it, I don't need to now either but I figured it's worth learning.
Once I pass my driving test and get my full license... I'm going to buy the girliest tiniest little Japanese car possible. I reckon I'd be the sort that would be prone to a bit of the oul road rage, so for my own safety and that of my passengers and my wife, it's better to get a really slow crap car

BTW, what is up with American cars being so big? First time I ever visited the States I couldn't believe how stupidly huge the American versions of familiar models were. I need to know.

Suckers, trying to be trendy and get the biggest trucks on the road. And all of the sudden gas prices go through the roof. Now it cost them $20.00 just to drive to the store. I'll be able to buy a hummer for $50.00 by the end of this year  It's just a coincidence though.
