We watched "Bad Grandpa" last night. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments. I couldn't figure out why it bothered having a plot, but the bits were funny.

What a beautiful-looking film--no surprise really since it was directed by Wong Kar Wai. I might have to buy this one to keep. 1/2
Did you see Ip Man parts one and two?
No, but I have heard those are very good.

Donnie Darko
I give it 4 stars for the way the movie made me feel. It was about a boy with schizophrenia who has hallucinations and believes in time travel. The odd quietness of the movie makes one feel like they are inside of the boy's head, in his small hallucinogenic world. Might be the same feeling as if one was reading the story instead of watching the story.
Bought this one just yesterday as a set with S. Darko, I'll watch that one later. Seems like it might be about his sister who is Samantha.
[Edited 2/4/14 23:14pm]
S. Darko 1/2
It was a continuation about Donnie's sister Samantha who grows up, not with schizophrenia as it seemed Donnie had, but the same time travel theme. She died 2 times in the movie and came back to life by someone traveling back into the past. Instead of having hallucinations like Donnie did, she was the 'hallucination' in someone else's mind. Don't understand why there was a missing little boy in the story and he ended up in someone's dream as a hallucination that led Sam's friend to travel back in time to the point where before Sam died the first time and brought her back to life.
It didn't live up to the first in the series and seemed like a stretch that this would also happen to his sister. If she was having hallucinations too I would understand since schizophrenia can be genetic and siblings both could have it. |

Philomena (2013)
A good movie that could have easily drifted into schmaltz territory, but featured good writing and directing, and a understated but nuanced performance by Steve Coogan. Dame Judi Dench was stellar, and worthy of an Oscar nod. For my , a really good but not great movie that's worth seeing for the performances (like American Hustle).
Bonus points for the early Downton Abbey-Game Of Thrones mashup featuring Charles Edwards (Downton's currently missing Gregson) and Michelle Fairley (Thrones' Catelyn Stark, last seen at the Red Wedding).
.75

American Hustle: And to think I thought Wolf of Wall Street was overrated! Hustle is better but still not worthy of all the nominations/awards it has or has gotten! I remember thinking, this better not win over !2 years.... 7.5-8.0 out of 10
47 Ronin' - I actually enjoyed this film; Keanu was his normal wooden/emotionless self, but the movie overachieves in spite of him. IMO 8/10 |

It was so sad to see Ceasar's innocence lost. He was like a trusting little ape and became an angry and strong leader of the apes. Funny how he only learned to talk after he was in captivity, must've evolved or something.
It's one of the best blockbusters of the last decade or so because of the story, which could be an allegory for a lot of things.

I was still thinking about the scene where he had the other chimp give cookies to each of the other chimps. It made me think of prison and the gangs in prisons and how when gangs are formed they have that need of belonging fulfilled and that's why he said he was 'at home'. Kinda glad they didn't make him fall in love with a female ape and turn it into a love story but kept the story going. |
