The Invisible Woman (2013) - At the height of his career, Charles Dickens meets a younger woman who becomes his secret lover until his death.

It's a very well-done period piece. The subject of gender inequality is brought up in the film and I couldn't help but make note that Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas, who played lovers in the movie The English Patient several years ago, are reunited here except now his character is paired with her character's daughter. I know the movie is based on real events, but I still found that fact unintentionally symbolic. star star star star

The Master – There were great moments, lots of terrific & odd things that I enjoyed, and I was never bored, but it didn’t seem to come together in a really satisfying way like There Will Be Blood did, at least on the first watch. I will definitely watch it again.

It reminded me of a Coen Brothers movie in that it's a snapshot of the main character's life and where it ends is where it ends.

Cutie and the Boxer (2013) - This candid New York love story explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of famed boxing painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife, Noriko. Anxious to shed her role as her overbearing husband's assistant, Noriko finds an identity of her own.

Before Midnight (2013)

Likely not my favorite of the trilogy, but the most self-aware. Crackling dialogue, a perfect blend of the sweet and the lowdown. I liked how it poked fun at Sunrise and Sunset while staying true to the spirit of those flicks. Well done.

It's by the same director of A Separation and it's every bit as excellent as that movie. star star star star star

20 Feet from Stardom (2013) - Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea who these singers are or what lives they lead, until now.

This is a great documentary for everyone. star star star star 1/2

Frozen
3.5/5

I liked Tangled SO much better
In this movie they burst into song every 2 minutes which was tiring.
I cried twice and I hate the movie for that mad
Prince Hans was loudly called a douche by a member of the theatre audience and a tired toddler whined "I don't like this movie!" Those were my favourite parts.

But the snow looked powdery and glittered so I'm giving an extra 1.5 stars for that.
I'm the mistake you wanna make

Attack the Block - 3.5/5 I lost about half the dialogue to the thick accents, but that didn't take much away from my enjoyment - tightly paced, all around good fun.

Saving Mr. Banks (2013) - Author P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen.

It was a very sweet and charming film. I didn't expect anything different from Disney. star star star 1/2

August: Osage County- 3 out of 5 stars

Emotionally violent. I'll take bloody action movie violence over this type of emotional violence any day. Great acting, but felt I was at a family reunion I wish I was't.

The Hunt - 4/5 A lie may destroy an innocent person. The lack of skepticisim & a few other plot short-cuts bothered me a little, but this is a very tough drama, adult in the best sense of the word & very much worth watching.

I saw this the other day as well. Very good, but it will definitely NOT be added to my list of Christmas films I watch every holiday season--such a sad story. star star star star

I watched "Rocky III" the other day. That is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and it never gets old.

I got so inspired that I immediately went to the gym and set a couple new personal records for weightlifting.

That movie just freaking ROCKS.

Gimme Shelter

This movie is worth watching if only just for Rosario Dawson's performance. Its stellar. It reminded me of the movie Monique won the Oscar for. Similar role, but utterly surprising from Rosario. Vanessa did a good job as well. I give the movie 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

Change it one more time..

I give it 4 stars for the way the movie made me feel. It was about a boy with schizophrenia who has hallucinations and believes in time travel. The odd quietness of the movie makes one feel like they are inside of the boy's head, in his small hallucinogenic world. Might be the same feeling as if one was reading the story instead of watching the story.

Bought this one just yesterday as a set with S. Darko, I'll watch that one later. Seems like it might be about his sister who is Samantha.

Such an amazing picture. Great story, cinematography, amazing performances by Bruce Dern and June Squibb. It will go down as an american classic in the future, certainly one of Alexander Payne's best efforts alongside Sideways.

The Master is my favorite film of 2012, I really liked everything about the film, it wasn't fully coherent as TWBB but hey, PTA did a GREAT job developping Freddie Quell & Lancaster Dodd. The movie has a lot in it.. the acting is just so fine and Joaquin deserved that oscar.

Also, the music of Jonny Greenwood off Radiohead makes it feel so psychedelic & strange, almost David Lynch surreal, it's what I like about TWBB and Punch drunk love also, the strangness of the scenes.

BTW, have y'all noticed that the trailers had some scenes that never made the final cutt? They're all gathered in this video:

What a beautiful-looking film--no surprise really since it was directed by Wong Kar Wai. I might have to buy this one to keep. star star star star 1/2
