FRANCE DECIDES ON NEW WORD FOR 'SEXTING' The French government’s language authority has created the term ‘textopornographie’ to take its place, according to its official list of new and updated words. By Victoria Taylor / New York Daily News Thursday, December 19, 2013, 1:45 PM The language of love now has its own word for sexting: textopornographie. L'Académie française, France's official language authority, decided that "sexting" needed a French equivalent, Vice Motherboard reported. The academy, which was established in 1635 to update the language, recently released its new list of foreign words that have been French equivalents. These include "vidéoagression" for "happy slapping" (the British version of the "knockout" game), and "surtransposition" for "gold plating." Sexting joins a long list of technology-related English terms that started creeping into the French lexicon before they were replaced. Instead of using LOL, the French write "MDR" for "mort de rire," or "dying with laugher." The word "hashtag" in the Twittersphere has been given the boot and "mot-dièse" (literally "sharp word") has taken its place, according to the Associated Press. The French have also bid adieu to "email" and said bonjour to "courriel" in 2003, Motherboard reported. Link

I love the word, it's very descriptive in a refined way about an action that would be damaging to most people I think.

It's hyper-French, like some silliness you'd hear the Quebecois using. I'd just assume the French in France would be casual and use the English "sexting." [Edited 12/19/13 17:36pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Too long and does not sound sexy. 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Nay. It's the french trying to keep their language (and culture) "pure." It's arrogant and unrealistic. French already has lots of words derived from non-Romance languages, like Arabic and German. English has a bunch of words and influences from french (pork and beef) from the Norman conquest, and ever since, such as maître d' (d'hôtel) and coup d'état. English is now the lingua Franca, which means lots of languages are gonna get words like computer, facebook, ... And sexting. Deal with it.
