Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel split

Not shocked.

After a decade of marriage, Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel have separated, PEOPLE has learned.

"Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time," reps for the couple tell PEOPLE. "Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time."

Diggs and Menzel, both 42, met as costars in the original production of the Broadway musical Rent in the mid-1990s. They married in 2003 and had a son, Walker, in 2009.

Menzel, a Tony Award winner for Wicked,spoke to PEOPLE about the marriage earlier this year, saying it wasn't always smooth sailing.

"We work at it," she said. "I'm not going to glamorize it or glorify it – we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much. We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate."

Scriptgirl you're not shocked but I am. Taye ALWAYS talked about his "boo" and they appeared on shows a couple of times together. It's just amazing that after 10yrs, a son, 2 careers going strong that they feel it's best to call it quits. That's not a formula to END a marriage...Of course we don't know details but I hope they find their way back to each other before signing divorce papers...

I wonder what made their marriage break like that. Some marriages you just KNOW are not for real but I think Taye and Idina were cool up until this point so this news WAS a little shocking.

I can remember him being on some lawyer tv drama and folks said he made some off remarks then. if it keeps coming up then maybe he has said some things.

Taye has said some ignorant ish a bout black women. there was a huge uproat about it. what he said I don't remeber, but it was after Stella gets her groove back came out.
