So I'm off to college next year (I need help!)

Hey guys, I usually don't post on here a lot cause of time, but next year, I am off to college! I have a slew of schools I have the option of going to and I am in the process of app-filling, but I need your input! I am thinking about being a music major! Yes, the low paying, job-seeking major! Music is a passion of mine, and I am a musician myself. I started on and still play clarinet, and also play low brass instruments. I am a top low brass member at my high school. Also, I am first chair tenor at my hs jazz band. I have a grasp on basic theory (from school courses) and have been in honors and marching band. I also have a little grasp in piano, but not much

I feel like being a music major makes others think that I'm lazy, but music is something I love. I have also been considering chemistry or chemEngineering. Too many choices for me, and its a hard decision... is considering music a bad thing? And a waste of time cause of lack of pay and carreers? Despite my passion, I am confused and bamboozled, guys razz neutral

you can make money being a musician, but only rarely do musicans earn enough to live on, including health and dental. most musicians i know have day jobs, and play gigs at night when they aren't working.

by all means follow your dreams!! but leave those dreams room to grow on as you get older and have more experiences and find that your goals and desires are changing. good luck

Can't you minor in music or have 2 majors? Everybody needs to eat.

Try to get every single scholarship you can. Work with the college, with your high school, and with parents that have sent kids off to school before and garnered some scholarships.

The goal is to graduate with NO debt. That way, you can start your professional life owing nobody, which means you have a chance to do anything you want. That will make any career in music possible.

You can do it!

Thanks! I have good grades, and an ok ACT score, and I'm part of a couple community things, so I think I can score some scholarships

Where I went to university, there was an Electronic Music course as well as a Music Tech one. I got an angry talking to once because I was hanging out at the music centre while not actually being on the course smile

There was NO opportunity to "major in 2 subjects" (that's American terminology, where I went, it would probably have been called a "pathway") or anything, and I didn't see that there was any lack of student numbers. So, young man, you can DO it! smile

(one guy that I knew who was ON Music Tech. was deejaying at the Univ nightclub, so that was pretty cool - once you make the stuff you can actually DEMO it live IN the vicinity! smile, and that guy no doubt went on to work somewhere, and we're probably hearing his beats in a Missy Elliot song or something now smile (just conjecture on my part)).

My daughter only took out a $500 loan, and the rest are scholarships. The $500 will most definitely be paid, before she graduate, if she doesn't take out any more loans, which I doubt.

You can

Then you should go with the two majors. I think that you should speak with your guidance counselor. Before she started college this year, that is what she did.

I think audio engineering or business would also be a cool counterpart to double major with music. Maybe even pysch (though pay would be LOW for any career invloving that).

I was just reading this in a few months old magazine and thought of this thread.

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre give $70 million to create new academy at USC

May 15, 2013

Entrepreneurs and music industry icons Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre (Andre Young), already known as forward-thinking visionaries in music and business, are giving $70 million to USC to create a unique undergraduate experience.

The duo’s gift will establish the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andr...Innovation, an environment for those rare undergraduate students whose interests span fields such as marketing, business entrepreneurship, computer science and engineering, audio and visual design, and the arts. The program will prepare them to become a new generation of inspired innovators.

I'm not sure what school you'll be attending, but seeing where these music business people invested their money might give you an idea of where the "need" in the music industry is being anticipated might help you make a decision.

Awesome! But DO. IT. NOW.

Pay no attention to the deadlines for submissions. Even if they say it's not "first come, first served" my experience is that the first applications in for any scholarship get the most attention.

You should have all scholarship applications in by November 30th if at all possible.

Good luck!
