another movie I am lookin forward to:The Monuments Men

This one is kinda one that I think could suck ...

Bill murray and john goodman as soldiers .... ok give them the benefit - they are I guess professionals that are thrown into the search for treasures (artwork etc).

We love movies where the Nazis are the bad guys ...

I like that trailor better but here is the first trailor ...

I hope it is good - but I think it has already been delayed til 2/2014 (think it was supposed to be out for Christmas ...

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

Hmmm not sure I will watch it. It doesn't sound too interesting to me but I'm glad to see John Goodman doing his thing.

The Monument Men were a real division of the Allied Forces. You should read "The Rape of Europa" or watch the documentary of the same name. It talks about how Hitler had this plan to build a museum in his hometown (Linz, Austira, I think it was) and the Nazis systematically plundered the countries they conquered, destroyed art they considered "degenerate" and saving the art Hitler wanted for himself and his museum. The Monument Men were were tasked at coming in after liberation to try to save/restore the art and architecture that was destroyed during the second World War. It's really interesting and also discusses how different museums planned to safeguard their treasures from the Nazis.

As an aside, if you are into how the Nazis felt about art, you could also look up the Degenerate Art Show from 1937. Hitler hated "modern" art and had his art commissioner Adolf Ziegler organize a show of what they considered degenerate (ie modern) art - works by Gabo, Picasso, Klee, etc. Hitler had this crazy idea (well, he had a lot of crazy ideas but one was) to link Germany in the 1930s to the great ancient Greek civiliations. The art the National Socialists and Hitler found appropriate was, in some ways, trying to make this connection as a way to return Germany to its former glory and greatness, paternity, the fatherland! (Remember they were severly punished after WWI.) There is also a film by Leni Reifenschtal (sp?) around the time Berlin hosted the Summer Olympics (1936) where she overtly links the modern German athletes to the ancient Greek sculptures. (I forget the name of the film, but you could probably Google it.)

A few months ago I was reading a speech by Hitler about his thoughts on art for a tour I was developing; he felt that if you liked "modern" art (abstract) something was physically wrong with you and you literally needed your eyes checked. wacky

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
