Wanna Hear Some Thing REALLY Fucked Up? I know there is no competition in posting but it just seems that more people were sympathetic for the little kitty that was killed that Natsume wrote about in her thread than the 3 children killed mentioned in sag10's thread.
I know you can all post where ever you want and should not be told where or what to post and I am not judging anyone in anyway, but this is exactly it.. People do seem to sympathise more for animals than humans these days..Why?

Well, there are other ways to look at it...
Perhaps people were more disturbed by the child thread and either didn't even look at it, or were so horrified they didn't know what to say.

Maybe it's because they have a relationship with Natsume so felt more compelled to reply.

Not that they don't have a relationship with Sag of course! I just meant that Natsume was directly involved whereas Sag wasn't.

So Natsume is 71 orgers?

For me, it had more to do with the thread titles. I often shy away from those that highlight issues I know will get me down. Natsume's was pretty inconspicuous, so I was lured in.
As to your general point, I think you make a good one. I think people have reached a level of collective compassion fatigue, and it's disturbing. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

My point is, and I may have a few but I want others to add their views here, that, say in Europe, spain for example. animals are animals and treated like animals, over in the UK we hear of some children who are treated worse than you could ever imagine and that doesnt happen so often to our animals. Children are tortured, raped, killed and the criminal is not punished enough IMO, yet if someone inflicts cruelty on animals they are fined and banned, sometimes for life from keeping pets.. Ok I admit I have kinda gone off on a tangent here, but that is another point I wanted to put across. Is there no value in human life anymore?

Know what I think?...
I think people have become so jaded and cynical of one-another's motives, values, shortcomings, etc., that we simply don't care about one-another, or we might even feel on some level (maybe subconsciously) that a person in trouble somehow gets whatever he/she deserves -- especially when that person is different than ourselves. It's easy to feel bad for animals. In our minds, they're cute, defenseless, without malice or sin. Just a theory. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I commented on both... Lammastide is right, some things are just too disturbing and they really bother some people. Once they read the title, that's enough.
Oh shit, my hat done fell off

I think you just hit the nail on the head, Lammaside, although I am passionate and emotional, I feel sorry for both, but more so humans...

I think so too. Plus the incident may mean that I am in danger and a lot of orgers wanted me to move out in order to prevent me from being hurt or killed. Actually a lot more of the responses had to do with the cat and how sad it was... when the point of the thread was to bring the attention to ME (I know, it's always me me me ). I was shocked and horrified when it happened but more than anything I was concerned how it affected the safety of myself and those around me. That's all. I mean, like, where is the sun?

Perhaps people were more disturbed by the child thread and either didn't even look at it, or were so horrified they didn't know what to say. Well said as always. I think that it is presumptuous to assume that just because people did not comment on that thread that they didn't care. I didn't comment on it precisely for the reasons you stated apples, and not becasue I am imune to such things.

I understand that you found the lack of responses to that thread confusing. However, I just don't think that it is fair to assume that this indicates a lack of sympathy or feeling for such a horrible event. I don't think that comparing the two threads was fair or even necessary. I like to think that nobody could be so cynical as to not bat an eyelid when a child loses his or her life. Not posting on a particular thread doesn't always mean you haven't read it. I was at a loss for words in this particular case. That's all Red. I'm sorry if I sounded harsh.

I didnt find the lack of therads confusing at all, it just gave me the thought that this could be true these days..yes I compared them cos they were two sad stories both on the forum together and it made me think.. Ok, I am not getting my point across here.. I may not necessarily just be talking about children, I am talking about human life.. Ok, an example...years ago everyone was there to help each other, people they knew or people they had never met, I have been in this situation before, but really IMO nobody wants to get involved or help cos either it is too much hassle, they may deserve it, turning a blind eye or whatever, or they fear for themselves... I lived in a community where everyone helped each other, I have sinced moved away but it is sad that nobody wants to help anymore and just gets on with their lives thinking that it wont happen to them.. Where is the spirit, where is the love?? Sept 11th showed this spirit and eagerness to help but on a daily basis we see the news and feel pity for a moment then shrug it off? Agree?

I understand what you are saying and honestly after the HUGE mindblowing event of Sept 11, I have a hard time really being moved. But as for animals it is something different. There is still compassion, feeling etc.. I think it is just burn out and callousness generated by oversaturation. Back in the day when the 1st shuttle blew up America was in shock for weeks and this time it was like oh damn poor people what else is on? I contribute this to the availability of information, I mean we watched a twelve year old boy die in Israel last year and they showed it on the 6 o'clock news here and I recall no one said anything other than the news media warning that it was graphic. But it is so common place the shock value is going or gone. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou
