They forgot the most important one: There is no right not to be offended. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Genesia said: They forgot the most important one: There is no right not to be offended. You're a stupid bitch for saying that! But I've got the right to say that, don't I? Of course I don't mean that. And of course we DON'T have the right to offend because then saying what I just said would be perfectly normal. And it isn't. I never said anything was offensive for *everyone*. There ARE things that are offensive TO ME in any and all circumstances.
But people will not usually know what offends me unless they ask. And I will not campaign to make what is offensive to me against the law or anything like that. I simply avoid or limit my exposure to it. [Edited 10/9/13 15:25pm]

You have the right to be rude and ignorant, just remember not everyone's going to turn the other cheek and take your shit. That's the beauty of social media - it turns mice into men. Look at the racist, sexist, homophobic shit mfers post on YouTube, Facebook & Twitter. Fucking keyboard gangstas.

R there things people feel r downright offensive...but still make u crack a grin? Like I know its wrong to make fun of fat people...but when I see a very large person eat a jumbo sized #12 with dbl meat and dbl cheese...but get the large soda in a diet variety...I cant help but to turn and grin....so they don't see me grin...cuz I wouldn't be able to stop the grin.

I live in Holland and we have had this discussion in politics for the last few years. There's politicians wanting to win votes by blaming all problems on foreigners, whether it's immigrants or the EU. I think there is more to it than just the law. Even if the law allows somebody to say racist things, then still it's not okay. I think we agree on that, don't we? So I think we DO have the right not to be offended, but it's always a question of how far you can go.
