Ex-Moderator | That can help.
And you can consider this or not, but the running method I used is to run 10 minutes, walk 1 minute and I repeated that rhythm every time I ran no matter how long or far. I even did my 10 mile race that way. Apparently there are long-term marathoners who have tried it and found it helped them as well with time and stamina. |

2-1/2 miles last night - 8 days to the event. Ran two big hills last night - and did the second faster than the first. It was great - I felt like I could have gone forever. Pretty sure I can get to three miles for my trial run on the course this weekend.
It's going to get cooooooold this weekend and next week. Right now, I'm feeling like the elements will be my biggest hurdle. But overall, I'm happy with where I'm at! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Genesia....what is your toughest part of running for long periods of time. Are you winded or do your legs get tired. You may want to consider using an elliptical if you have access to a gym. When you use it you can gradually increase resistance on the machine. You can periodically increase the speed at which you are moving and also increase the depth of your step. Obviously using the elliptical is not a natural motion...like running. But it really increases leg strength and endurance if you use the machine properly...which inturn will increase your endurance for running. Not to mention you don't have to freeze your ass off. I have been using an elliptical for 3 months and my running speed and distance has greatly increased.

My toughest part of running for long periods of time is that I have never run for long periods of time! Seriously...until two months ago, I had never run farther than 200 yards in my life (and I was a kid when I did that). We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well, yesterday was my last run on the course before the event on Thursday. It was the first time I've done the whole thing - and I ran all but about 200 yards of it. I lost my stride on a couple of huge hills and just couldn't get it back in the moment. But now, I know what I need to do - get into my "hill rhythm" and don't let it go for anything. Look no more than ten yards ahead of me (enough so I don't run into anyone, not so much that I sweat what still lies ahead). [Edited 11/25/13 8:43am] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. Yay! Today's your 5K! How'd it go? We have ours today too - it's called the "turkey run" put on by our community center and fire dept. the kids have a 1-mile kids run. Your post #66 you say you felt you could have gone forever, and Post 68 you mention your Spring 5k You are "hooked," like I've seen happen to many people who start running. I bet you'll start thinking about a 1/2 marathon, and full marathon, at some point. There are some fun ones, like the one put on by Nike that people keep wanting me to do. But unlike most people, I just haven't been able to get past being a 3 mile runner - kids, etc. Just don't get injured! Don't do too much at once, even if you feel like you can. Keep a very gradual pace of improving length and speed. And listen to your body if you have any soreness in joints, feet. Running is a great exercise, supposedly our bodies are made for it. Great way to lose weight, be fit. But then there's an injury and then they are noticeably less fit looking (I.e., gain weight) and a bit depressed for a while (like withdrawal).
