Two miles! woot!

I feel especially great about my distance because it was so, so cold last night - about 23º at run time, with a bit of a windchill. I'm still trying to figure out the best thing to wear. I felt like I'd been overdressing for the last few runs, but last night I felt like I'd never get warm - even though I perspiring. (I was wearing a wicking base layers, so it wasn't the perspiration that chilled me.) Oddly, the part of me that felt coldest was my lower lip. Not sure what that was about. If it's that cold the next time I go out, I'll wear my gaiter and pull it up over my mouth and nose. I may look like a bank robber, but I'll be warmer. lol

It took me 10 days to get from one mile to two. Ten more days puts me at the Sunday before Thanksgiving - the day I hoped to be able to run the entire 5K course. (The event, itself, is on Thanksgiving.) Can I get the final mile in 10 days? Stay tuned...

Well, I hope so - because I'm certainly working hard enough at it. lol

One thing I really have to guard against is going out too fast. I've done a couple runs on the 5K course, so far - and I'm finding that, even without others out there "inspiring" me, I run the first mile too fast (for me). I think it's because there's a slight downhill grade at the start of the course, so I get going faster without realizing it. That's not a problem except that I need to have something left in the tank for miles two and three - and so far, I haven't.

So this week when I go to the course, I'll set my running app so it gives me both distance and pace. I had turned off the pace part of it because it was making me feel bad (because I was so slow), but it can work the other way, too! lol

That can help.

And you can consider this or not, but the running method I used is to run 10 minutes, walk 1 minute and I repeated that rhythm every time I ran no matter how long or far. I even did my 10 mile race that way. Apparently there are long-term marathoners who have tried it and found it helped them as well with time and stamina.

It's a great method for folks starting out and can help with pacing as well. Some people may think you're not really running then, but I disagree.

Interesting. I can see where doing intervals like that would help you go faster (because your system gets a short breather). I might try this on Sunday - the first time I will do the whole 5K course. I'm finding that even at times when I walk on that course, I'm not going slower than 14 min/mile - so I don't think it'd hurt my pace.

Thanks. Now, let's see if I can time the one-minute intervals to coincide with the bigger hills. lol

2-1/2 miles last night - 8 days to the event. Ran two big hills last night - and did the second faster than the first. It was great - I felt like I could have gone forever. Pretty sure I can get to three miles for my trial run on the course this weekend.

It's going to get cooooooold this weekend and next week. Right now, I'm feeling like the elements will be my biggest hurdle. But overall, I'm happy with where I'm at! biggrin

Genesia....what is your toughest part of running for long periods of time. Are you winded or do your legs get tired. You may want to consider using an elliptical if you have access to a gym. When you use it you can gradually increase resistance on the machine. You can periodically increase the speed at which you are moving and also increase the depth of your step. Obviously using the elliptical is not a natural motion...like running. But it really increases leg strength and endurance if you use the machine properly...which inturn will increase your endurance for running. Not to mention you don't have to freeze your ass off. I have been using an elliptical for 3 months and my running speed and distance has greatly increased.

My toughest part of running for long periods of time is that I have never run for long periods of time! Seriously...until two months ago, I had never run farther than 200 yards in my life (and I was a kid when I did that).

The fact that I can now run for more than two miles is an effin' miracle. My legs are plenty strong, I just run out of steam. It takes time to get the cardiovascular capillary system built up - and at my age, it's going to take longer than it would some 20- (or even 30-) something. I don't think pushing harder than I already am is going to make that happen any faster.

I'm actually really pleased with how far I've come. I may not be able to run the whole way on this 5K - but I will on the one I plan to do in the spring!

But, yeah - once this event is over, I will definitely be looking to take the running indoors on colder days. Our corporate gym has an 1/8-mile track, so I don't have to be bound to a treadmill. I've used ellipticals and stationary bikes, too - I'd just rather be moving (and outside, if at all possible).

Well, yesterday was my last run on the course before the event on Thursday. It was the first time I've done the whole thing - and I ran all but about 200 yards of it. I lost my stride on a couple of huge hills and just couldn't get it back in the moment. But now, I know what I need to do - get into my "hill rhythm" and don't let it go for anything. Look no more than ten yards ahead of me (enough so I don't run into anyone, not so much that I sweat what still lies ahead).

It was so cold out there - so it was also a dry run for what I'll wear on Thursday. The temperature is supposed to be about the same, but less windy. Despite the outside temperature, I got a little warm yesterday, so I'll lose a layer and I should be fine. The company I work for is a sponsor of the event, so we have a heated tent and private porta-potties. So I don't have to worry about getting chilled before the race.

One more easy workout tomorrow (1/2 distance at a comfortable pace), lots of water and adequate food the next couple days - and it's on! biggrin

Thanks - and thank you for your encouragement along the way!

I've trained as well as I could. I could use another week (and some slightly warmer weather), but it is what it is. And the conditions will be the same for all of us, so...

People keep telling me that this is a super fun event - I hope they're right!

I picked up my stuff yesterday - the bib and the schwag bag. Had I know our company was donating all the t-shirts, I would have ordered a smaller size. This thing is huge! lol

I had my final pre-race workout last night. It was a bit of a change-up - I've done every run outside, but it was just too cold and windy to do an outdoor run last night. So I did it on the indoor track at work. I was only "supposed to" do a mile-and-a-half, but it felt so good (no hills on the track lol ), I did two miles - and I sprinted the last lap.

Tomorrow will be cold, but it isn't supposed to be windy. I'd like a little sunshine, but the forecast doesn't look promising. We'll work with whatever we get!

But cold can be good for a run. And when you are there all the energy of the other runners and the spectators will help!

Yay! Today's your 5K! How'd it go?

We have ours today too - it's called the "turkey run" put on by our community center and fire dept. the kids have a 1-mile kids run.

Your post #66 you say you felt you could have gone forever, and
Post 68 you mention your Spring 5k

You are "hooked," like I've seen happen to many people who start running.
I bet you'll start thinking about a 1/2 marathon, and full marathon, at some point. There are some fun ones, like the one put on by Nike that people keep wanting me to do. But unlike most people, I just haven't been able to get past being a 3 mile runner - kids, etc.
Just don't get injured! Don't do too much at once, even if you feel like you can. Keep a very gradual pace of improving length and speed. And listen to your body if you have any soreness in joints, feet.
Running is a great exercise, supposedly our bodies are made for it. Great way to lose weight, be fit. But then there's an injury and then they are noticeably less fit looking (I.e., gain weight) and a bit depressed for a while (like withdrawal).
