DID YOU KNOW...? Potatoes are actually fruit.

Nobody ever realises that potatoes are fruit. The chief reason for this is that it's not actually true, but aside from that it makes for quite an interesting talking point. I find myself quite surprised when I discover that many things, potatoes included, are in fact not fruit, since so many things that are ostensibly something else turn out to be fruit if you look them up on Wikipedia.

What else can you think of that would be really interesting were it true, despite in fact in 'real life' it not being?

I could say my feelings are hurt, but they really aren't so I guess we are all in the same boat.

This reminds me of something about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. I understand it isn't cut in stone either way, it can be both depending on who is using it. I think in cooking it's considered a vegetable.

Either way eating fresh food is good for you.

Outside of that, nope, there's nothing this week that's has surprised me.

Regarding tomatoes, yes, it's generally thought of as a vegetable in cooking because it's usually not used in sweet cooking. However, scientifically speaking, it's a fruit. biggrin

Potatoes are actually fruit, but they're not fruit?

Interestingly enough...the actual FRUIT of the potato plant resembles a small tomato.

The part we eat is the tuber of the potato plant. The fruit is inedible.

Tomatoes and potatoes are both members of the nightshade family.

Are nightshades fruit or vegetables? I WILL have more replies on my thread, bong be damned.

Indeed. They come in pods similar to peas and they look just like nuts, which explains the name.

A tomato is both a vegetable and a fruit. "Vegetable" is something of a catch-all term that describes many different things, including the fruits of several plants (like avocados, pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatos, etc.)
