Our friend Dewrede - R.I.P. Well I'm sat in the departure lounge at Manchester airport bound for Marmaris on a ten day break
A year ago I was sat in the same place ready to set off for Rhodes when I again logged on the org and read of the tragic fate of my org friend Dewrede. So It'd just like to take a few minutes out to remember an org legend Thank you

I'm sorry for the loss. I read the other thread about Dewrede passed, pulmonary embolism. I lost my mother to that when she was 29 and my great-grandmother was 25 and giving birth to my mom when she died from a pulmonary embolism. I was 17 when I was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, in the hospital for 22 days (ICU twice), discharged home, back in the hospital 2 weeks later with pulmonary embolisms. The thing is, when you are young (and yes, 37 is young) they often misdiagnose pulmonary embolisms. Prior to my first hospitalization with DVTS, I went to the ER, coughing up blood, each breath felt like a knife being pierced through my side. I couldn't take a deep breath without excruciating pain. They sent me home with a diagnosis of pluerisy. A week later, I was admitted with the DVTs, and a little over a month later, I was admitted with pulmonary embolisms, the same exact symptoms I had when they diagnosed me with pleurisy. Education in this matter is vital, for doctors especially, because they do not know to look for pulmonary embolisms in younger people. It is considered an "older person's disorder". At 37, they may not have been looking for a PE.
I would suggest that if you are interested in donating to reasearch in DVTS and PEs. Dr. Stephen Moll at UNC Chapel Hill is researching clotting disorders and is very passionate about this subject. I've met him several times and he has some of my blood for research purposes. I've tested negative for every known clotting disorder. We just know it's hereditary, but not what causes it.
One of his patient's started a patient advocacy group. More people die from pulmonary embolisms than die from breast cancer and AIDs combined each year. Cancer research and AIDS research has gotten much more publicity and resources because they had advocacy groups, they had people talking about them, but there wasn't an advocacy group and no one was talking about blood clots, and so funding for research for blood clots was very limited (even though it killed more people than breast cancer and AIDS combined.) This advocacy group is bringing about more education which is resulting in more funding opportunities for research.
The thing with blood clots is that the treatment is usually no better than the condition itself. Warfarin/coumadin (anti-coagulants of this nature) are very unstable. EVERYTHING interacts with the medication and can impact how effective it works. Sharp cheddar cheeses, leafy, green vegetables, green / herbal teas, cranberries, and the list goes all, all contain vitamin K, which is a natural blood thinkener. So it decreases the effects of coumadin. Except cranberries actually interrupt the way coumadin is broken down in the system. I will be on coumadin/warfarin the rest of my life. As I age, I am at an ever increasing risk of a fatal bleed from the medicine that I have to take, to keep me from developing a life threatening blood clot. If a large clot breaks off and goes to my lungs or heart, I have 10 minutes and there is nothing no one can do. If my INR goes as high as it did in 2009 (11.9 - normal, for someone not on anticoagulants, is 1.0, most people for heart conditions and such, it's 2.0 to 3.0. They keep my INR at 3.0 to 3.5 (because I've developed clots at the 2.0 to 2.5 range, and that is considered exceptionally thin. The 11.9 I had, a single bruise from bumping into a coffee table, could have caused me to bleed out before help could arrive.)
If you truly want to remember Dewrede (and others like him) donate to National Blood Clot Alliance: Stop the Clot: http://www.stoptheclot.org/ I have no idea why I'm still alive 30 years after developing my first DVT and PE. I should have died many times, came close many times. Each 10 minutes I am given, is a blessing.
Rest in peace dewrede, and know there are people out there advocating for research and cures for what took your life at such a young age. And we won't rest until we find a cure. The thing is, 20% of those with a clotting disorder do not know what clotting disorder they have, because it hasn't been discovered yet. I'm one of the 20% that doesn't know what causes her clots. And a cure can't be found, until they can find why.
