Its probably because the color photography makes it seem so modern and fresh, but then you realize these people are long gone from this earth.

Color photography by means of glass plates was patented by the Lumière brothers in France in 1903 and was commercially available in 1907.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Image people two hundred years from now watching movies being made today.

On Monday evening, I spent 3 1/2 hours (without intermission) watching D. W. Griffith's Intolerance, a silent film released in 1916. And I recorded Way Down East and The Wind to watch later. I love early films - they're amazing.

I imagine future audiences will find many jewels among today's films. (Though probably not the crap that comes out of the major studios.)

If its still around, imagine people looking at youtube videos a hundred years from now. We are currently living in the most documented point in human history.

I watched Metropolis (from 1927 getting to be a 100 years) I found it kind of eerie seeing all these people who have been dead for so long (most born in the 1800's). Now if that was in color with sound, wow. It's kinda like opening up a time capsule.
